JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Perioperative Services, and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for filling the surgical scrub role on all types of minor and major surgical procedures based on individual competencies in each surgical specialty. Assist physicians and nurses in various medical and technical procedures. These functions must be in compliance with the hospital's philosophy, standards of practice, and regulations of governing agencies.

Reports To: OR Department Manager

Classification: Non-exempt

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School graduate or equivalent required. BLS Certification.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist preferred.
  • Two years previous experience as an operating room technician desired.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE

Category I exposure to blood borne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards, and potential encounter with radiation hazards.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Decision making concerning equipment and/or instrumentation sterilization.
  • Biohazardous waste disposal per institutional policy.
  • Housekeeping duties per OR housekeeping policies.
  • Patient care and patient flow management.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Creates a safe environment for surgery.
  • Uses medical equipment safely.
  • Provides cost-effective patient care.
  • Implements principles of medical and surgical asepsis per standards and policies.
  • Provides physical safety for the patient.
  • Accounts for sponges, needles, instruments, and other foreign bodies.
  • Assists surgeon in scrubbed cases.
  • Prepares supplies for upcoming cases.
  • Demonstrates cooperative attitude with coworkers, management, patients, visitors, and physicians.
  • Maintains a safe work environment in compliance with OSHA and infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of Instrument Processing from decontamination to storage.
  • Adheres to facility’s policy on Immediate Use Sterilization.
  • Checks room for cleanliness and supplies at the start of each day.
  • Uses surgeon preference card for supplies and instruments.
  • Performs surgical hand scrub and dons sterile gown and gloves.
  • Maintains sterile technique during gowning, gloving, and draping.
  • Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts.
  • Handles specimens per policy.
  • Transports instruments to decontamination area properly.
  • Stores unused sterile supplies and instruments at the end of the day.
  • Restocks operating rooms to PAR levels.
  • Attends all department meetings or reviews materials.
  • Informs supervisor of work progress.
  • Completes required education and adheres to facility standards of behavior.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands include frequent sitting, conversing, listening, handling objects, reaching, and specific vision abilities. Must be able to lift over 20 pounds regularly and push/pull over 25 pounds. Must stand or walk at least five hours daily.
