Job summary

Arkansas Children’s Hospital is hiring a Surgical Technologist II to support the operating room team. You will prepare the OR, ensure sterile technique, and assist with instruments and counts throughout procedures from newborns to adults.

Under surgeon and RN supervision, you’ll help in case turnover, maintain sterile fields, and participate in safety initiatives. This full-time role requires adaptability and teamwork in a high-stakes environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Related field work experience in surgery (1 year) preferred.
  • An Associate's degree is recommended.
  • CST certification recommended by the NBSTA.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares operating room with appropriate instrumentation, supplies, and equipment.
  • Performs surgical counts with RN prior to procedure.
  • Sets up majority of sterile field prior to patient transfer.
  • Anticipates instrumentation needs to support case turnover.
  • Gowns and gloved surgeons and staff using sterile technique; maintains sterile field.
  • Counts sponges, blades, needles, and instruments at appropriate times.
  • Communicates changes in surgeon preferences and implants with RN.
  • Assists with final counts and cleanup after procedure.
  • Cleans, prepares, and transports instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Reprocesses instruments and reports damage or repair needs.
  • Assists with room turnover and restocks supplies.
  • Communicates instrument needs for upcoming cases to OR staff.
  • Promotes safety and reports safety concerns.

Proficiently prepares the operating room ensuring the availability of appropriate instrumentation, supplies, and equipment for assigned cases in all services. Applies critical thinking to improve the process of room preparation and flow. 2. Performs surgical counts with RN prior to the procedure. 3. Proficiently ensures that the majority of the sterile field has been set-up prior to the transfer of the patient into the operating room. 4. Consistently anticipates the instrumentation needs for the upcoming and to-follow cases aiding in case turnover time. 5. Uses knowledge of sterile techniques to competently gown and glove surgeons, assistants and self, passing instruments, and draping sterile field and maintaining sterile field throughout the procedure. Seeks to improve sharps safety measures. 6. Maintains sponges, blades, needles, and instruments in an orderly fashion and actively counts at appropriate times and responds promptly to request by the RN or surgeon to count. 7. Communicates with team in regard to changes in surgeon's preferences and to the RN on implants, medications, and surgical specimens. 8. At the close of the procedure, assists the RN with final surgical counts and breaking down of the sterile field ensuring the appropriate disposal of sharps. 9. Cleans, prepares, and transports instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists with instrument reprocessing tasks and inspects instruments for damage or repair needs reportling promptly to the Service Leader and/or the SPD Supervisor. 10. Assists other team members with cleaning and room turnover consistently ensuring the operating room is ready for the following case. Ensures unused supplies and equipment have been returned to storage areas and room supplies restocked. 11. Communicates with operating room when instruments are needed ofr the following cases. 12. Promotes safety and promptly reports any safety concerns to the RN or Team Leader. 13. Actively participates in improvement of patient care and the work environment through varying improvement activities. 14. Performs other duties as assigned.
