Job summary

St. Louis Eye Surgery & Laser Center is seeking a Surgical Technician to assist in the operating room under surgeons, RNs and surgical assistants. You will help organize the OR, prepare instruments, and ensure safe, efficient case flow.

The role requires a high school diploma, BLS certification, and preferred CST or CST-like certification. Training is available, with PRN scheduling and no late-night shifts. You will contribute to patient care while maintaining HIPAA and operating room standards.

• Assists in surgical operations under the supervision of Surgeons, RNs and Surgical Assistants.

• Assists Nurses and Surgeons in delivering high standards of patient care.
• Prepares and assists with instruments, supplies and sterile packs.
• Gathers supplies, ensures equipment works, and maintains sterile technique.
• Keeps records on medications, specimens, implants and related materials.
• Supports continuing education and participates in QA/PI programs.

Hours:

• PRN
  • For the first couple months of training, you will work 3-4 days a week (either Monday-Wednesday or Monday-Thursday)
  • After training, you will typically work 1-2 days every week/every other week
• Our office is open Monday-Friday from 5:30am-6:00pm
  
  • You may have to work a little earlier and/or later as needed
  • Your shift will typically start at 5:30am, and end in early/mid-afternoon, depending on the surgery schedule for the day
  • NO late nights, weekends or major holidays!
    

Requirements:

• High School diploma or GED required
• Surgical Technician experience is preferred, but we are willing to train!
• Eye surgery experience is preferred
• Certified Surgical Technician (CST) or other Surgical Technician certifications preferred
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
• Favorable result on background check required

SUMMARY

Assists in surgical operations under the supervision of Surgeons, Registered Nurses and Surgical Assistants. Assists in the organization and daily function of the operating room in accordance with established Federal, State and accreditation standards and company policies and procedures. Assists the Nurses and Surgeons in delivering the highest standard of patient care available.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs their duties in an ethical and legal manner within the scope of their certification.
• Complies with HIPAA regulations.
• Ability to scrub all types of cases performed at the company.
• Ability to anticipate the needs of the Surgeon and has equipment, medical gases and supplies readily available for all procedures.
• Participates in continuing education/in-service training as needed, staff meetings, and Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program.
• Knowledge of central and sterile supply department.
• Opens all sterile packs according to sterile technique and prepares instruments as needed.
• Helps prepare Operating Room by setting up surgical instruments, ensuring equipment works properly, labeling sterile solutions.
• Helps gather supplies and equipment in the room.
• Maintains record on field of medication used intra-operatively, specimens retrieved, tissue implanted, implants, liquids or chemicals on field.
• Passes instruments and other sterile supplies to surgical assistants.
• May hold retractors, cut suture, help count sponges, needles or blades if applicable.
• Prepares, cares for and disposes of specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
• Operates sterilizer, lights, suction, and other Operating Room equipment and diagnostic equipment.
• Assists in patient transfer to PACU, if needed.
• Helps clean and restock operating room.
• Assists with any technical function under supervision of system to carry out a safe operation.
• Preps, drapes and positions the patient for surgery.
• Prepares for case according to Surgeon’s preference card.
