Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain medical equipment and instrumentation for procedures.
  • Set up sterile field with instruments, drapes and solutions.
  • Follow state and federal regulations in patient care.
  • Perform pre-procedure skin and body preparations.
  • Assemble equipment and verify proper function prior to use.
  • Assist with patient preparation and transport to the OR.
  • Position patient and manage draping per procedure protocol.
  • Pass instruments and supplies to surgeons during operations.
  • Count sponges, needles, and instruments; ensure accuracy.
  • Assist with specimen preparation and disposition.
  • Apply dressings and assist with post-procedure transfer.
  • Restock and clean the procedure room; participate in inventory.

General Summary of Duties

Surgical technologists, also called scrubs and operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. They are members of operating room teams, typically including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.

Education / Experience / Requirements
  • A graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
  • Certification and BLS required.
  • At least 2 years’ operating room experience required.
Essential Functions
  • Prepare and maintain medical equipment and instrumentation for procedures.
  • Set up the sterile field, including instruments, drapes, and solutions.
  • Follow state and federal facility regulations when attending to patients.
  • Perform pre‑procedure skin and body preparations.
  • Complete a safety check prior to the start of the procedure.
  • Assemble sterile and non‑sterile equipment and verify proper function.
  • Assist with patient preparation and transport.
  • Assist with patient positioning on the procedure table.
  • Drape the patient according to procedure protocols.
  • Pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and assistant surgeons.
  • Retract, cut sutures, and perform other tasks under physician supervision.
  • Participate in sponge, needle, supply, and instrument counts.
  • Help prepare specimens and assist with their disposition.
  • Apply dressings.
  • Assist with patient transfer from the procedure bed to the stretcher post‑procedure.
  • Clean and restock the procedure room.
  • Pull supplies and instruments for upcoming procedures.
  • Assist with physician preference card maintenance and inventory management.
  • Assist decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and quality testing of sterilization equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical / Mental Demands
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift or turn disabled patients.
  • Requires sitting and standing in a normal office environment.
  • Can concentrate for up to four hours.
  • Communicate verbally in person and over the telephone.
  • Use a computer keyboard and view a computer monitor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide age‑appropriate care.
  • Utilize recognized communication channels.
  • Maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, coworkers, and other healthcare team members.
Physical / Mental Demands (Reiterated)

Surgical technologists work in clean, well‑lit, well‑ventilated environments. They must stand for long periods and remain alert during operations. Exposure to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials may occur.
