Job summary

Lifepoint Health® is seeking a Certified Surgical Tech to maintain the sterile field in the operating room and assist the surgical team by passing instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgery. Reports to the Director of Surgery/OR, with a non-exempt FLSA status in a hospital setting.

Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent; surgical technologist program preferred, and BLS within one month of hire. Applies to internal/external candidates in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred; surgical technologist program preferred.
• One month from hire date for BLS certification.
• Experience in sterile field management and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Maintain sterile field and aseptic technique throughout procedures.
• Assist surgical team by passing instruments, sutures, and sponges.
• Prepare OR equipment and supplies and restock after procedures.
• Disinfect and clean the operating room; assist with patient prep and transport.
• Adhere to hospital standards and participate in in-service training.

11139 Certified Surgical Tech

Maintain the sterile field in the operating room, being constantly vigilant to see that proper aseptic techniques are utilized to prevent contamination and infection. To assist the surgical team as the sterile member who passes instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgery.

Reports to: Director Surgery/OR

FLSA: Non-exempt

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent Preferred; Surgical technologists graduate from surgical technology program (Years of relevant experience may be substituted for required education/certification.)

License

Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) required one month from hire date

Required Skills

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Essential Functions

Before an operation, helps set up the operating room and organizes sterile table with surgical instruments and equipment, sterile linens, and sterile solutions.

Checks, adjusts, and operates equipment such as sterilizers, lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units, and diagnostic equipment.

Maintains supply of fluids such as plasma, saline, blood, and glucose for use during operation.

Prepares patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites. Also transports, positions patients on table, and covers them with sterile surgical 'drapes'.

Scrubs hands and arms, puts on sterile operating room attire to be able to work within the sterile field established around the patient and to handle the sterilized instruments, equipment, and supplies used in the procedure.

Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments, and providing sterile items in an efficient manner.

Helps prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and applies dressings as directed.

Cleans and restocks the operating room.

Adheres to The Joint Commission (TJC) on professional standards and attends hospital in-service training sessions as directed. Provides age-appropriate care for all age groups.
