Job summary

Ridgeview Medical Center is seeking an OR Surgical Technician to provide patient care in the operating room under the supervision of the RN circulator. The role involves preparing sterile fields, assisting surgeons intra-operatively, and ensuring safe, efficient procedures across general, urology, ob/gyn, eye, plastic, cardiovascular, orthopedics, and ENT cases.

Qualifications

• Must graduate from an approved Surgical Technician program or be a graduate of an accredited practical nursing program.
• Knowledge of sterile technique and handling of sterile equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal.

Responsibilities

• Assess procedures and room readiness with the circulating nurse to prepare the OR.
• Prepare and maintain the sterile field for each procedure.
• Assist the surgeon intra-operatively as directed by the RN circulator (excludes high-risk tasks).
• Assist with room turnover in OR suites between cases.
• Maintain accurate counts of instruments, sponges, needles and blades.
• Support a wide range of surgeries including general, urology, ob/gyn, eye, plastics, cardiovascular, orthopedics, and ENT.
• Participate in quality improvement activities and serve as a patient advocate.
• Interact with peers and contribute to professional development.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for providing surgical patient care and related services in the operating room under the supervision of the RN circulator to ensure a safe and efficient surgical environment.

Job Functions

1. Assesses surgical procedures and patient specific requirements with the circulating nurse to ensure proper preparation of the operating room.
2. Prepares and maintains the sterile operating field for the duration of each surgical procedure.
3. Assists the surgeon as needed during the intra-operative procedure. (Does not include Important Surgical Tasks: opening and closing, dissecting tissue, removing tissue, harvesting grafts, transplanting tissue, administering anesthesia, implanting devices and placing invasive lines).
4. Assists with room turnover in O.R. suites between cases.
5. Performs accurate instrument, sponge, needle, and blade count.
6. Assists a wide variety of surgeries including general, urology, ob/gyn, eye, plastic, cardiovascular, orthopedics, and nose and throat.
7. Participates in quality improvement activities as appropriate to position.
8. Serves as a patient advocate.
9. Interactions with and contributes to the professional development of peers, other health professionals and colleagues.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Work Experience

• Graduate from an approved Surgical Technician program OR Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Knowledge of sterile technique and handling of sterile equipment
• Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions
• Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above
• Preparation and maintenance of a sterile field
• Ability to work autonomously and as a team
• Ability to work and multi-task in a high stress and fact paced environment
• Ability to respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populations

License/Certification

• Surgical Technician Certification (obtained within six months of hire) (grandfathered if hired prior to 4/2015) OR Current Practical Nurse licensure in Minnesota or if licensed in another state, a permit from the Minnesota Board of Nursing while the license application is in process.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross within 30 days from hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous surgical experience in a hospital or similar healthcare setting
