Job summary

Pinnacle-Orthopaedics- is seeking a Surgical Tech to scrub and assist surgeons across operative cases. Requires graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology program or two years of OR experience, plus current CPR certification. Ability to achieve BCLA certification within 60 days is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing the operative suite for surgery and maintain sterile technique.
  • Assist the surgeon and scrub nurse during operative cases with a preference card guidance.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort, monitor equipment and supplies for posted cases.
  • Assist in cleaning the operating room between cases and restock for the next scheduled cases.
  • Maintain sterile technique and counts of sponges, needles, and instruments.

JOB SUMMARY:

To scrub and assist the surgeon on all operative cases. Must have special knowledge of individualized cases and physician’s preferences with the aid of a preference card.

In which progressive leadership, administrative and clinical competencies have been demonstrated, preferably with a minimum two years in the operating room. Management experience desirable. Current certification in BCLA or ability/commitment to achievement of certification within 60 days of employment.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to move upper extremities within full range of motion as well as stoop and bend at 90 degrees. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

STANDARDS OF CARE:

Assists in assessing the physical and environmental needs of the patient and participates in planning perioperative care.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION:
  • ____A. Ensures patient comfort and safety measures are maintained.
  • ____B. Anticipates special needs, equipment and supplies for the patient relative to an accurate physical assessment of the patient by a nurse.
  • ____C. Assists in preparing the operative suite for surgery, checking supplies, equipment, and instrumentation.
  • ____D. Assists in cleaning the operating room between cases, as necessary.
  • ____E. Ensures availability of adequate supplies and instruments for posted cases and assists in opening room in a sterile fashion.
  • ____F. Utilizes surgeon preference cards to check with each case and updates as needed.

Assists in implementation of patient care plans.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION:
  • ____A. Assists the surgeon during a surgical procedure with a high degree of efficiency, physician and patient needs during the case.
  • ____B. Recognizes the need and obtains assistance for the initiation of emergency measures.
  • ____C. Assures that the contaminated case routine is followed according to written policy.
  • ____D. Assists in draping to provide a sterile field.
  • ____E. Conscientiously observes and reports any breaks in sterile technique to the attending surgeon and R.N. circulator.
  • ____F. Ensures that surgical asepsis is maintained in the handling of instruments, sponges, sutures, drains, needles, and dressings.
  • ____G. Assures that sponge, needle, and instrument counts are correct before the patient leaves the operating room.
  • ____H. Utilizes non-chargeable items in a cost effective manner.
  • ____I. Assists in moving patient to stretcher after case.
  • ____J. Maintains a clean and orderly environment within the operative suite.
  • ____K. Provides specimens to circulating nurse, identifying tissue and site of specimen.
  • ____L. Assists circulating nurse during local procedures as assigned.
STANDARDS OF CARE:

Assists in the daily maintenance of the department.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION:
  • ____A. Restocks assigned room at the end of each day.
  • ____B. Helps to restock sterile supply room as needed.
  • ____C. Pulls cases for the next scheduled day as needed.
  • ____D. Assists in completing monthly work assignment sheet.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION:
  • ____A. Assists in orienting new staff members to the unit.
  • ____B. Maintains good relationships and communicates well with patients, families, staff and physicians.

  • ____E. Shares knowledge with co-workers through open communication and continuous upgrading of skills.

  • ____A. Minimum amount of heavy lifting for this position. Must lift instrument trays, move equipment, and assist with the transfer of patients from one location to another.
