Job summary

Good Shepherd Health Care in Hermiston, Oregon seeks a Surgical Tech – Scrub Tech to support the operating room team in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative duties. The role involves maintaining sterile technique, assisting with instrument setup, and supporting the surgical team throughout procedures.

Position offers a 12-hour flex schedule with call requirements. A $20,000 sign-on bonus is available with a two-year commitment, and housing options are provided for night call.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required for Tech I.
• Associate degree or national certification required for Tech II.
• Certification as Surgical Technologist required for Tech III.
• One-year perioperative services experience preferred for Tech II.
• Three years perioperative experience required for Tech III.

Responsibilities

• Preoperative duties: gather and open supplies, scrub, gown and glove, set up sterile field, counts with circulator.
• Intraoperative duties: anticipate needs, pass instruments, assist with draping, manage supplies and medications.
• Maintain sterile technique and assist with instrument preparation and terminal cleaning of room.
• Assist with prepping OR for next patient and participate in debriefing and quality improvement.
• Ensure privacy and confidentiality of patient information; participate in ongoing education.

Compensation Range:

Surgical Tech I: $29.83 - $49.95/hour (Step Scale 1 - 20)

Surgical Tech II: $31.61 - $52.92/hour (Step Scale 1 - 20)

Surgical Tech III: $32.56 - $54.52/hour (Step Scale 1 - 20)

Definition of Position:

Facilitates the operative or other invasive procedure by preparing and providing the required sterile instruments, supplies and equipment. Maintains the sterile field and anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgical team.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

Preoperative Duties are as follows:

• Donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Gathers, checks and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
• Performs the surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves.
• Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.
• Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator.
• Assists the team members with gowning and gloving.
• Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
• Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
• Secures tubing, cords and other sterile accessories.
• Maintains sterile field and reports any contamination.

Intraoperative Duties are as follows:

• Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.
• Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.
• Labels, measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
• Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
• Sponges or suctions on the operative site.
• Applies electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders.
• Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
• Coordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon.
• Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
• Performs additional counts as necessary.
• Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
• Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.
• Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
• Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room.
• Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient.
• Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.

Postoperative Duties are as follows:

• When SPD is unavailable, decontamination of instruments/equipment.
• Assist with post procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure room and prepare room(s) for subsequent patients.

Other Duties are as follows:

• Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
• Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to scrub person activities.
• Assist with stocking chores.
• The employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
• Participates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position (reference program education curriculum).
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
