Job summary

Carondelet St. Josephs Hospital in Tucson is seeking a Surgical Technologist to assist the surgical team under RN supervision. You will scrub and prepare sterile field, pass instruments, and help maintain an efficient operating room.

The role requires strong aseptic technique, the ability to scrub multiple specialties, and solid teamwork. Healthcare experience, BLS certification, and good communication are essential to support patient care and safety.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assist surgical team before, during, and after surgery following time-out and Universal Protocol.
  • Prepare OR by placing equipment and arranging instruments.
  • Pass instruments to surgeon and maintain sterile field.
  • Monitor supplies and organize case turnover.
  • Maintain accurate counts of needles and sharps.

Job Summary

Assists the surgical team to provide patient care for assigned patients under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Demonstrates increasing knowledge of physical and technical requirements of surgical intervention: Moderately complex procedures, advancing knowledge of instrumentation – specialty sets. Demonstrates increasing knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Ability to scrub more than one specialty proficiently. Willingness to assist circulator. Responsible for maintaining effective communication skills. Participates in monitoring and maintaining resources in specific department. Understands and contributes to the vision/mission and goals of the department. Works in a secure department with access to areas where medications are stored. Handles and labels medications on the sterile field under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.

Responsibilities
  • Level 1
    • Assist the surgical team before, during, and after surgery. Participate in “time-out” and follows Universal Protocol Policy.
    • Place equipment and supplies in the operating room and arranges instruments according to preference cards.
    • Hand instruments and supplies to surgeon, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and performs other technical tasks as directed by surgeon during operation.
    • Identify problems/concerns on the nursing unit and assists in developing resolutions in a positive, constructive manner.
    • Make a positive contribution to the morale of the unit/section/department. Participate in performance improvement teams/activities.
    • Demonstrate ability to provide appropriate care to patients of all ages.
    • Anticipate supplies and equipment needed by utilizing surgeon’s preference card.
    • Understand and demonstrate principles of asepsis. Use sterile technique when opening supplies and throughout procedure.
    • Review anatomy and physiology involved. Review operation of needed equipment for procedures.
    • Assist with proper positioning of patient.
    • Demonstrate Intra-operative knowledge and ability. Keep accurate count of needles, sharps, and instruments according to policy.
    • Use proper technique for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and draping.
    • Review operation of equipment and supplies as personal needs dictate to remain current in ability to use and operate equipment and supplies.
    • Avoid unnecessary conversation during procedure.
    • Organize in preparation for end of case and assists in clean up and turnover of rooms. Dispose of all sharps, biohazardous waste items appropriately. Handle specimens properly.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of principles and proper use of various sterilization types and document cycles appropriately.
    • Report equipment malfunctions to manager.
    • Use time management and flexibility in organizing and prioritizing workload to provide optimal service to the department and the network.
  • Level 2 – Proficient (in addition to above duties)
    • Serve as a preceptor/mentor for students and staff, as appropriate.
    • Act as a resource to promote occupational therapy within Carondelet.
    • Participate in hospital safety and emergent programs.
    • Direct the practice of support staff to achieve the patient’s functional goals.
    • Cooperate with faculty of affiliated schools or health programs to assist in providing an optimum learning environment and experience for students in the department.
  • Level 3 – Subject Matter Expert (in addition to above duties)
    • Participate in performance improvement teams/activities and quality improvement measures within the department.
    • Give input to department Manager/Director in coordinating ongoing treatment plans and progress.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Requirements
    • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
    • Experience:
      • Principles of asepsis.
      • Ability to scrub more than two specialties proficiently.
      • Must possess effective interpersonal skills, team building, problem solving, and critical thinking, coaching and mentoring.
    • Licensure/Certifications: BLS
  • Preferred Requirements
    • Experience:
      • Knowledgeof hospital environment desired.
      • Previoushospital and/or health care related experience preferred.
    • Licensure/Certifications: Successful completion of Surgical Technologists course from an accredited facility.
