Mount Carmel Health System seeks a Surgical Technologist First Assistant to support operative procedures under RN supervision. You will set up, maintain the surgical field, and assist the surgeon during operations with a focus on safe tissue handling and assiduous teamwork.

The role requires a CFA/CAAHEP CFA pathway or equivalent certification and includes day shift duties with on-call and weekend rotation. On-site at Mount Carmel facilities in Ohio.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent required.
• CFA/CAAHEP accreditation preferred (ARC-ST).
• Certification options: NCCSA CSA, ABSA SA-C, NBSTSA CSFA.

Position Purpose

The Surgical Technologist First Assist, under the direction of a Registered Nurse, will provide patient care in an atmosphere sensitive to each person’s physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Under the RN’s direction, sets up, and maintains the surgical field and assists the surgeon during operative procedures.

What You Will Do

• The surgical first assistant performs within the scope of service allowed by Mount Carmel Health System, even though they may have received training on tasks beyond what is allowable by the MCHS Scope for non-physician first assistants.
• Performs observable, technical behaviors (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective) as delegated by the surgeon. Practices within boundaries set by state and federal regulation and/or licensure in a non-physician role.
• Ability to perform continuously detailed tasks with frequent interruptions and re-prioritize work constantly.
• Assists in providing safe positioning of patents under the direct supervision of the RN
• Assists in surgical case preparation (equipment, supplies, and instruments).
• Collaborates with the surgeon to provide exposure of the field during operative procedure handles tissue and uses instruments under the direction of the surgeon.
• Anticipates and assists in providing hemostasis during operative procedures under the direction of the surgeon.
• Performs closure of surgical incisions as directed by surgeon.
• Select and apply appropriate wound dressing.
• Provides assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Graduate of a Certified First Assistant (CFA) program through the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology (ARC-ST) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) preferred.
• Licensure / Certification: One of the following certifications is required:
• National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) – Independent certification board of the National Surgical Assistant Association – Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA)
• American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) – Surgical Assistant, Certified (SA-C)
• National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical assisting (NBSTSA) – Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA)
• Knowledge of applied microbiology, physics, mathematics, human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology
• Ability to use other software as required to perform the essential functions of the job
