Job summary

Baylor Scott & White Health in Plano, Texas is seeking a Surgical Tech First Assistant to serve as a Certified Surgical Technologist. This role supports surgeons during major surgical procedures, ensuring all supplies and equipment are ready and functional.

The ideal candidate will have 2 years of clinical experience and the CST or CSFA certification. The position includes a $10,000 sign-on bonus and opportunities for professional development.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of recent clinical experience as a CVOR CSFA.
  • Must hold the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules.
  • Scrub for cases in major surgical services following established procedures.
  • Assist the surgeon during procedures by passing sterile supplies and equipment.
  • Stay updated on surgical equipment and trends by attending in-service education programs.

Job description

Sign‑on Bonus

$10,000 sign on bonus (Based on eligibility)

Location

The Heart Hospital - Plano (Flexibility to float between all THH campuses, including THH Dallas, Plano, Denton, and Frisco)

Shift

Full‑time, days, two 12‑hr shifts (6:30 AM‑7:00 PM) and two 8‑hr shifts (6:30 AM‑3:00 PM). 40 hours per week. Must be willing and able to participate in the call rotation and respond within established response times.

Experience Required
  • Minimum 2 years of recent clinical experience as a CVOR CSFA
  • Must be willing to learn Endoscopic Vein Harvest (EVH)
  • First assisting on adult cardiac surgery cases, including CABG, valve, aortic, and other complex open‑heart procedures
  • Cardiac and vascular tissue exposure, retraction, hemostasis, cannulation assistance, and closure techniques
  • Assisting with sternal opening and closure
  • Independent scrubbing of cardiac, thoracis, vascular, and endovascular cases as needed to support operational staffing needs
  • Experience assisting in minimally invasive and robotic cardiac procedures
  • Experience with endovascular and vascular surgery cases

Job Summary

The Surgical Tech First Assistant serves as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and a First Assistant. The role supports surgeons during major and complex procedures, working under a Registered Nurse’s direction as a CST and under a Surgeon’s direction as a First Assistant.

Essential Functions of the Role
  • Ensures supplies, equipment, and instruments are available and functional for each procedure; updates surgeon preference cards, pulls, opens, and sets up cases; coordinates with surgeons on equipment and supply needs; assists in building specialty instrument trays
  • Prepares the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules; arranges sterile setups of instrument table supplies and equipment; wraps instruments for gas or steam sterilization; performs quality control procedures on equipment and reports any issues; keeps the OR clean before and after surgery
  • Scrubs for cases in major surgical services following established procedures and standards; requires advanced knowledge of anatomy and surgical instruments; knows surgeons’ preferences and technical knowledge
  • Educates and prepares surgical teams according to procedure
  • Assists with or performs the positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient
  • Assists the surgeon during procedures by passing sterile supplies and equipment; holds retractor devices and responds to the surgical team’s needs; ties off vessels and tissues, repairs incisions, and cuts and cauterizes tissues; stabilizes drains and applies wound dressings as needed; performs complex surgical techniques as directed by the physician and Texas scope of practice; receives and notifies the circulating nurse of surgical specimens; delivers specimens to the appropriate location
  • Contacts the pharmacy for prescriptions with the registered nurse or circulating nurse partnership
  • Coordinates and works with system vendors for the surgeon and department; researches and obtains quotes for capital purchases, new equipment, and supplies with specialty coordinators; orders supplies
  • Stays updated on surgical equipment, trends, and techniques by attending in‑service or internal education programs; serves as a resource and preceptor for those learning the scrub role; helps the department through in‑services, precepting, and mentoring staff
