Job summary

AdventHealth in Lake Wales, FL is seeking a Surgical First Assistant to support operating room teams by preparing suites, selecting instruments per surgeon preference cards, and assisting with hemostasis and closures.

Qualified candidates will have an accredited Surgical Technology program, BLS, and preferred CSFA/CSA or SA credentials. Two years of related experience is preferred; on-site daytime schedule with competitive benefits.

Qualifications

• Completion of accredited Surgical Technology program.
• Preferred CSFA/Certified Surgical Assistant or SA credentials.
• BLS CPR required.
• Reading, writing and speaking conversational English.
• Minimum 2 years related experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Sets up operating suites with physician preference cards.
• Determines appropriate surgical equipment and supplies.
• Achieves hemostasis during procedures.
• Assists with closures, wounds, dressings, and drainage systems.
• Visualizes operative sites via tissue manipulation, retraction, suction, and irrigation.

Job Description:

• Utilizes physician preference cards to set up operating suites and updates cards as instructed.
• Determines appropriate surgical equipment and supplies based on physician preferences.
• Achieves temporary and permanent hemostasis using appropriate techniques.
• Assists with body plane closures, wound dressing applications, and securing drainage systems.
• Provides visualization for operative sites through tissue manipulation, retraction, sponging, suction, and irrigation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to prepare surgical suites with appropriate instruments, resources, and supplies based on surgeon preference cards
• Knowledge of instruments, supplies, and equipment utilized for surgical procedures
• Understanding of the procedures being performed and ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon
• Strong physician/surgeon relationship skills and team mentality
• Up-to-date knowledge of patient rights and ability to respect cultural, psychosocial, and spiritual values
• Up-to-date knowledge of applicable regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards and requirements
• Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals
• Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Previous first assistant experience related to the area of specialty [Preferred]
• Knowledge of Anatomy
• General knowledge of asepsis, healing, infectious disease process, surgical anatomy and physiology, safety issues, and operative techniques
• Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Course
• Completion of Certified Surgical First Assisting Program [Preferred]
