Job summary

Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital in Chicago, IL, seeks a Certified Surgical First Assistant to join the Surgery team on a Per Diem basis with daytime hours.

In this role you will support surgeons during complex procedures, perform preoperative and postoperative duties, and ensure safe operations under the surgeon's direction. A valid certification and BLS are required.

Qualifications

• Certification by a recognized body as Surgical First Assistant.
• Five years’ experience in an acute care operating room in the scrub role.
• Current BLS for Health Care Provider (AHA).
• Proficiency across major surgical specialties listed in the job posting.
• Graduate of a medical education program approved by the Division or US military equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Provide intraoperative aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure and other tasks to support safe operations.
• Assist surgeon under supervision and follow hospital policy and regulations.
• Perform preoperative and postoperative duties to facilitate patient care.

Education

Responsibilities

The position of Certified Surgical First Assistant reports to the Clinical Manager/Director of Surgical Services in the Surgery department/unit. The mission of the Surgery Department is to provide a 24/7 high touch, high tech and efficient environment for our patients requiring elective, urgent or emergent surgical intervention. The Certified Surgical First Assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant performs these functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

• 1. Certification of completion from a medical education program approved by the Division, or has graduated from a United States Military Program that emphasizes surgical assisting
• 2. Certified Surgical First Assistant. Proof of current certification by one of the following certifying bodies: the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants as a Certified Surgical Assistant; the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting as a Certified Surgical First Assistant; or American Board of Surgical Assistants as Surgical Assistant-Certified.
• 3. Must be proficient in the following specialties: Major Vascular, Thoracic, Open Heart, Orthopedics, OB/GYN, General
• 4. Five years’ experience in an acute care operating room in the scrub role, preferred.
• 5. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Provider affirmation by American Heart Association.

Pay Transparency

Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital offers competitive compensation and a reasonable compensation estimate for this role is $37.12 to $37.12. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.
