Responsibilities

  • Recognizes and respects patient and family preferences and coordinates care with the interprofessional team.
  • Inspects OR for cleanliness, sets up equipment, and ensures sterile field integrity.
  • Gowns and gloving, assists with draping, and reports procedure status to relief personnel.
  • Counts sharps/sponges and maintains sterility; prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Maintains supplies and supports a safe, clean Operating Room; acts as primary preceptor when needed.

With a commitment to patient- and family-centered care, the Certified Surgical Technician functions as a member of the intraoperative healthcare team. Performs specific tasks to assist the surgical team in ways that values the uniqueness of each individual and addresses the physical, psychological, emotional, and social needs of the diversity of patients served by Jefferson Health, and is competent to provide care for all patient populations. The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) (TS-C) is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the sterile field. The Technician accurately and efficiently anticipates surgeon’s needs intraoperatively by applying comprehensive knowledge of operative procedures, equipment, anatomy and surgeons’ preferences. The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) (TS-C) works closely with all perioperative team members during the preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative care of the surgical patient. The Certified Surgical Technician also supports decontamination and sterile supply area, and maintains courteous and professional interactions with the patients and staff. Job Duties
  • Recognizes the patients, their family/designated care partner(s) in providing safe, compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient’s personal preferences, priorities, needs, and cultural beliefs and values. Communicates with and supports the interprofessional team, patient, family and designated care partners.
  • Inspects Operating Room (OR) for cleanliness and secures, sets up, and prepares OR equipment, instruments and supplies which are required for surgical procedures. Participates in team time out and is an active participant and advocate for patient safety and high quality care in the perioperative setting.
  • Provides assistance with gowning and gloving of Surgical team including the Surgeon. Assist with preparation of the sterile field including draping of the patient and maintaining sterile field integrity. Gives a thorough report to relief personnel on status of procedure, instruments, materials, and any other pertinent information to insure a smooth transition of personnel during the surgical procedure.
  • Counts all sharps, sponges and instruments with the circulating nurse prior to, during and after the surgical procedure. Follows the policy on how counts are performed, and initiates corrective action when count is incorrect. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Provides assistance in maintaining supplies and equipment available to ensure efficient unit operations. Helps maintain a safe, neat and clean environment to facilitate safe and effective patient care in the Operating Room. Acts as primary preceptor to other surgical team members as needed
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED Graduate of a surgical technician training program.
  • Knowledge of how to convey respect and collaborate with each patient, family and/or designated care partner in care.
  • Knowledge of people with diverse backgrounds and the ability to convey respect and connect effectively.
  • Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques, ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors. Uses the language of partnership with patients and families, engaging them in their health and health care.
  • Understanding of the necessity and value of accuracy and attention to detail, ability to process information with high levels of accuracy.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use industry standards, policies and procedures relevant to function and organization.
  • Knowledge of the physical environment and full spectrum of activities in developing and maintaining physical facilities.
  • Knowledge of the risks faced by patients in a healthcare environment, and the ability to take steps to reduce these risks.
  • Knowledge of the common types of equipment or devices used in the healthcare industry, and the ability to use these in patient care.
  • Knowledge of surgical assistance techniques and ability to successfully complete surgical procedures in compliance with applicable health and safety standards.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply appropriate policies, procedures and management methods to maximize operating room efficiency and productivity.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support AHA - American Heart Association
  • CST - Certified Surgical Technologist - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
  • TS-C - Certified Tech in Surgery - National Center for Competency Testing
Physical Demands

Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient’s weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
