Job summary

phsorg in the United States is seeking a Perioperative Sterile Processing Technician to support operating rooms at our NM facility. You will scrub, decontaminate, sterilize instruments, and maintain the sterile field, ensuring patient safety during surgeries.

The role offers a part-time 0.45 FTE schedule with day shifts, enhanced sign-on and relocation benefits for eligible candidates, and opportunities for tuition reimbursement, certifications, and loan forgiveness through NM Dept. Education.

Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or GED required.
  • Scrub various types of basic surgical procedures: general, OB/gyn, urology, gastroenterology; total joint; podiatry & ortho.
  • Current BLS required.
  • Short-term training in operating room setting preferred.
  • Previous experience with handling of sterile supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Follows approved infection control, quality assurance, and department policies for sterilization of instruments.
  • Maintains aseptic technique and safety in the use of instruments.
  • Performs instrument counts prior to procedures and maintains instrument inventory.
  • Prepares and maintains sterile field for surgeries and pre-operative care.
  • Loads/unloads sterilization cart items and ensures proper sterilization parameters.
  • Inspects, cleans, and sterilizes instruments and trays; supports perioperative department.

Schedule:
  • Week 1: 2 days
  • Week 2: 3 days (rotation of days off based on patient needs)
  • Call: 7-10 call days per month; (based on patient needs)
Additional Job Duties:
  • Follows approved infection control, quality assurance , and department policies and procedures related to the cleaning, decontamination , disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instruments, trays, packs, and reusable medical devices for all hospital departments and PMG clinics.
  • Demonstrates ability to problem-solve in relation to the procedure being performed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of various equipment, procedures and supplies.
  • Adheres to proper surgical procedures of aseptic technique and safety in the use of instruments and equipment.
  • Performs instrument counts prior to each procedure and maintains an accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments during the procedure.
  • Secures and prepares all supplies, instruments, and equipment required for surgical intervention before procedures.
  • Ensures the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in the OR.
  • Prepares patient skin for surgical treatment.
  • Position and re-position patient during surgery.
  • Helps monitor patients during surgery.
  • Provide supportive care during the pre-operative phase.
  • Performs scrub functions.
  • Ensures that specimens are correctly handled and routed to the proper source.
  • Maintains current knowledge of anatomy/physiology and medications used intraoperatively.
  • Keeps current with developments in the field through participation in seminars, workshops and publications.
  • Follows all federal, state and departmental safety procedures.
  • Identifies, inspects, and assembles all laser , endoscopic , general, and specialty instruments and equipment per specifications and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Adherence to proper attire within restricted and semi-restricted areas.
  • Adherence to donning and doffing of PPE requirements with proper hand hygiene practices.
  • Adherence to workflow patterns, standard precautions, sterility assurance, biological and chemical indicator monitoring.
  • Inspects, cleans, prepares, assembles, and sterilizes instruments and trays.
  • Decontaminates, performs high level disinfection and stores GI flexible endoscopes .
  • Processes instrumentation according to instructions for use.
  • Selects and operates specialized cleaning equipment.
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines for use of indicators for daily equipment performance testing of washers and sterilizers.
  • Meet regulatory requirements for sterilization, high level disinfection, biological monitoring , and employee competencies.
  • According to manufacturer guidelines, selects and prepares packing materials for the sterilization of reusable instrumentation.
  • Selects appropriate method of sterilization.
  • Properly loads and unloads sterilization cart items.
  • Verifies that sterilization parameters have been met before distribution.
  • Validates and maintains: event related protocols; disinfection and/or sterilization load parameters and records.
  • Accurately documents and maintains daily records of all QA and sterilization functions according to regulatory agency and Infection Control standards.
  • Inventories, restocks, and distributes instruments and medical equipment for the Perioperative department, other hospital departments and PMG Clinics.
  • Performs other functions as required.
