MLK Community Healthcare in Los Angeles, CA is seeking a Surgical Support Aide under the supervision of a registered nurse to assist in operating rooms and Post Anesthesia Recovery Room.

The role involves patient transportation, assisting with transfers, aseptic prep, equipment setup, and maintaining a safe OR environment. The position supports anesthesia and nursing staff and requires strong teamwork and reliability.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least 1 year hospital CNA/transport/central service/instrument tech experience.
  • Solid understanding of human anatomy, basic medical terminology, and rehabilitation principles desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient transportation throughout the surgical suite.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of patients arrival to insure continuity of care.
  • Assists with transfer of patient from surgical table to gurney or bed at end of procedure.
  • Assists the nurse and anesthesiologist with transporting of patient to Recovery Room.
  • Provides assistance to the circulating nurse when the operative site is being prepped by supporting extremity, or pouring of prep solutions while maintaining aseptic technique.
  • Assists with between case clean up and preparation of set-up for following cases.
  • Assists with cleaning and movement of furniture, equipment and floors, as needed. Utilizes universal precautions.
  • Assists with clean up and disposition of used instruments and equipment.
  • Anticipated and obtains needed equipment for assigned procedure, sets up and pre check for proper function.
  • Picks and/or completes picking up supplies for cases utilizing computer generated pick lists or preference cards.
  • Serves as an additional resource person in the provision of patient care as procedures require the need for additional personnel.
  • Provides support for the anesthesia department through stocking and maintaining of carts.
  • Inventories and stocks operating rooms with supplies as assigned.
  • Participates in training of new personnel.
  • Attends staff development activities including staff meetings and in services. (Minimum of 80%)
  • Participates in assigned Performance Improvement projects including correction of deficiencies. (80% participation in appropriate projects)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job description

Under the supervision of a registered professional nurse, the Surgical Support Aide provides support services that include but limited to general nursing care and other tasks that support clinical operations of the operating rooms Post Anesthesia Recovery Room. I.e. running errands, transporting patients, prepping, shaving, positioning of patients. Obtains special equipment for procedures and perform the cleaning of the operating rooms and surrounding areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provides patient transportation throughout the surgical suite.

a. Notifies appropriate personnel of patients arrival to insure continuity of care, proper identification and observation.

2. When requested, assist with transfer of patient from surgical table to gurney or bed at end of procedure.

3. When requested, assist the nurse and anesthesiologist with transporting of patient to Recovery Room.

4. Provides assistance to the circulating nurse when the operative site is being prepped by supporting exptemity, or pouring of prep solutions while maintaining aseptic technique.

5. Assists with between case clean up and preparation of set-up for following cases, working to insure a safe patient environment.

a. Assists with cleaning and movement of furniture, equipment and floors, as needed. Utilizes universal precautions.

b. Assists with clean up and disposition of used instruments and equipment.

c. Anticipated and obtains needed equipment for assigned procedure, sets up and pre check for proper function. The equipment includes but not limited to microscopes, video towers, video cameras, and fracture table. Maintains awareness of equipment and safety hazards to prevent rquipment damage or harm to patient. Routinely inspects and maintains equipment.

d. Picks and/or completes picking up supplies for cases utilizing computer generated pick lisats or preference cards.

6. Serves as an additional resource person in the provision of patient care as procedures require the need for additional personnel.

7. Provides support for the anesthesia department through stocking and maintaining of carts.

8. Inventories and stocks operating rooms with supplies as assigned.

10. Attends staff development activities including staff meetings and in services. (Minimum of 80%)

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A. Education
  • High School Diploma/ GED
B. Qualifications/Experience
  • At least 1 year previous hospital experience as a CNA, Surgical Transport, Centeral Service Technician, Instrument Technician.
  • A solid understanding of human anatomy, basic medical terminology, and rehabilitation principles is desired.
C. Special Skills/Knowledge
