A Brief Overview

The Surgical Pathology Technologist (SPT) dissects tissue specimens and provides dictated placement in plastic cassettes for embedding, staining, and microscopic analysis. This position includes coding and accessioning of specimens; processing biopsies and simple tissue specimens according to established protocols; and instruction of trainees in Gross Room and Frozen Room protocols and processes as well as specimen photography (when applicable). This position is responsible for providing direct coverage as well as responding on a STAT basis to the frozen section room for all SHC operating rooms and assisting with intraoperative consultations. This position prepares and performs specimen radiography of breast, bone, and soft tissue specimens. The SPT is also responsible for providing weekend and off-site location coverage on an as needed basis.

What you will do

• Receives samples via couriers or other hospital personnel. Handles patient’s samples appropriately and efficiently, distributing to the appropriate area of the laboratory or routing to other hospital departments as needed according to procedure.
• Accessions patient samples into the Laboratory information system(s). Checks all requests for proper and accurate patient information. Consults with Supervisor or Technologist if request is problematic. Notifies physician, nursing unit, clinic, etc. if sample received is inappropriate or compromised.
• Completes a gross examination, dissection, and selection of representative tissue for microscopic examination for designated simple specimens, as defined in the laboratory policy. This includes weighing, measuring, and selectively photographing tissue specimens.
• Assists pathologists, fellows and/or residents with intraoperative consultations and fine needle aspiration (FNA) adequacies.
• Performs and assists in allocating tissue from kidney adequacies for EM, IF, and routine pathological processing.
• Ability to cross-train in histology to assist in embedding of tissue for histological exam.
• Ability to cross-train in autopsy and perform waived technical duties, such as evisceration and general upkeep of the autopsy suite.
• Communicates with physicians, nurses, visitors, and other laboratory/ hospital staff in a cooperative and courteous manner. Responds to their needs appropriately with minimal waiting time.
• Follows all departmental policies regarding attendance, punctuality, health, and safety.
• Independently resolves problems encountered in routine work. Recognizes problems or requests which require Supervisor and/or Lead assistance when appropriate.
• Keeps current with all laboratory procedures, techniques, and changes in all areas of the laboratory through which he or she rotates. Meet competency standards of the department.
• Assists in routine and regularly scheduled preventive maintenance for all equipment and spaces according to established procedures.
• Understands patient care and laboratory priorities and independently assists others to ensure efficient workflow.
• Expected behaviors include adaptability to change, collaboration toward common goals, self-motivation, and taking initiative.
• Expected communication skills involve active listening and proper email etiquette.
• Adheres to all Safety/Health regulatory and state/federal legal requirements and policies, operating procedures, and Services Standard of the Hospitals.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Qualifications

• Bachelors_Degree B.S.. in the biological, chemical, life sciences, medical laboratory technology, or other related field required.

Experience Qualifications

• One (1) year of progressively responsible and related work experience preferred

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $48.38 - $54.48 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
