Job summary

Good Shepherd Health Care in Hermiston, OR is seeking a Surgical Tech to facilitate operative procedures by maintaining sterile field and supplying instruments and equipment. The role reports to OR leadership and supports the surgical team across pre-, intra-, and post-operative duties.

The candidate should have an associate degree or national certification, with 6 months of clinical experience preferred. This on-site position requires handling PPE, sterile technique, and teamwork in a demanding

Responsibilities

  • Preoperative duties: Donning OR attire and PPE; gathering, checking and opening supplies and equipment; performing surgical scrub and donning gown and gloves; setting up sterile back table and Mayo stand; performing counts with circulator; assisting with draping and sterile field; confirming patient/site during time out; managing tubing and sterile accessories; maintaining sterile field.
  • Intraoperative duties: Preparing instrumentation, anticipating needs, passing instruments, labeling and passing medications and irrigation solutions; assisting with retractors; suctioning; applying electrocautery; cutting sutures; coordinating robotic arms/instruments; maintaining sterile technique; completing counts; preparing dressings and specimens; cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization; prepping OR for next patient; participating in debriefing and quality improvement.
  • Postoperative duties: Decontamination when SPD unavailable; post procedure cleaning; preparing rooms for subsequent patients.
  • Other duties: Maintain privacy and confidentiality; participate in education and competency verification; assist with stocking; support hospital mission and procedures; participate in DNV program education; perform other related duties.

Schedule: Mon - Wed/Thurs - Sat 630 - 1900 Holiday Rotation A

Overview

Definition of Position: Facilitates the operative or other invasive procedure by preparing and providing the required sterile instruments, supplies and equipment. Maintains the sterile field and anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgical team.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

Preoperative Duties:

  • Donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Gathers, checks and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
  • Performs the surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves.
  • Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.
  • Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator.
  • Assists the team members with gowning and gloving.
  • Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
  • Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
  • Secures tubing, cords and other sterile accessories.
  • Maintains sterile field and reports any contamination.

Intraoperative Duties:

  • Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.
  • Labels, measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
  • Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
  • Sponges or suctions the operative site.
  • Applies electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders.
  • Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
  • Coordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon.
  • Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
  • Performs additional counts as necessary.
  • Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
  • Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room.
  • Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient.
  • Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.

Postoperative Duties:

  • When SPD is unavailable, decontamination of instruments/equipment.
  • Assist with post procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure room and prepare room(s) for subsequent patients.

Other Duties:

  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
  • Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to scrub person activities.
  • Assist with stocking chores.
  • The employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position (reference program education curriculum).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
