Job summary

Baylor College of Medicine's Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery seeks a Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner to care for Colorectal Surgical Oncology patients under physician guidance. You will assist in evaluating patients, determining treatment plans, and seeing post-operative cases.

You will perform pre-op assessments, peri-operative care, and post-discharge follow-ups, participating in rounds and clinic coordination with the supervising physician.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
• Master's degree in Nursing.
• Texas PA license and NCCPA certification.
• RN license and APRN-NP licensure (Texas).
• BLS certification.

Responsibilities

• Obtains detailed history and performs physical examinations for peri-operative care of surgical oncology patients.
• Perform or order x-rays, electrocardiograms, laboratory tests, and other diagnostic procedures, and interprets results.
• Formulate an assessment and plan; order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic tests in coordinator with faculty supervising physician.
• Round on inpatients nearing discharge, develop care plans, and provide detailed counseling on home care and clinic follow-up.
• Perform patient discharges and attend multi-disciplinary rounds to inform all teams of patient plans.
• Evaluate and treat postoperative and/or established patients independently as delegated in the clinic.
• Instruct patients on prescribed therapeutic regimens, home care and health maintenance.
• Administer such therapeutic procedures as injections, immunizations, suturing, and wound care.
• Perform bedside wound care procedures such as suture removal, staple removal, drain removal, and dressing changes.
• Perform pre-operative tasks such as reviewing pending labs and imaging results, and screening upcoming clinics, as well as post-operative phone calls.

Minimum Qualifications

Physician Assistant:

• Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
• Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board.
• The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistance (NCCPA) board certification.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Experience Required: None Required.

Nurse Practitioner:

• Master's degree in Nursing.
• Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing.
• Current Texas Licensure as an Advance Practice Nurse (APRN-NP).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Experience Required: None Required.
