Job summary

Ascension Health is hiring a Surgical Assistant for Columbia St Mary’s Milwaukee in the Surgery department. The role follows a Rotating Shift | PRN schedule in Milwaukee, WI, at Columbia St Mary’s Milwaukee facility.

You will assist in positioning patients, visualize operative sites, and help with tissue handling, retraction, suction, and irrigation. You’ll also help with wound dressings, drainage, and post-case cleanup.

Qualifications

  • BLS within 1 month (30 days) of hire; American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
  • NBSTSA Surgical Assistant credential preferred.
  • Education path includes high school equivalency or higher (see above)

Responsibilities

  • Position the patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
  • Provide visualization of the operative site using appropriate methods, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning and irrigation.
  • Assist with body plane closure, application of wound dressings and securing of drainage systems.
  • Assist in room clean up and the removal of the soiled case cart, supplies, and trash from OR room as needed at the completion of the surgical case.
