Job summary

Carle Health is seeking a Certified Surgical Assistant to support the perioperative team, assisting surgeons and acting as a surgical technician as needed. The role includes ensuring sterile environments, coordinating supplies, and supporting patient care under RN supervision.

Qualified candidates hold an Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology with CSA certification and BLS within 30 days, plus at least 3 years of surgical assisting experience.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Surgical Technology required.
  • CSA or exempt CSA certification options and BLS within 30 days.
  • 3+ years of surgical assisting experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain sterile environment and asepsis in procedures.
  • Assist in supplies/equipment organization and turnover.
  • Ensure trays, instrumentation and supplies are ready for each procedure.
  • Collaborate with surgeons and OR team during operations.
  • Participate in quality improvement and infection control activities.

Overview

The Certified Surgical Assistant functions as an integral part of the perioperative team as the assistant to the surgeon. Also functions when required as the first or second surgical technician or second circulator under the direct supervision of the registered nurse (RN).

Qualifications


  • Education Level: Associate's Degree

  • Field of Study: Surgical Technology

  • Licenses/Certifications: Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) - National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) Or

  • Licenses/Certifications: Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) Exempt - In role prior to 3/13/22 with training/experience - Exempt/Not Required Or

  • Licenses/Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)

  • Work Experience: Surgical assisting training in at least five major services

  • Length of Experience: 3+ years



Responsibilities


  • Applies the principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner to maintain a sterile environment. Demonstrates competency in select technical and psychomotor skills, judgment and appropriate knowledge base. Provides age specific care to obstetrical patients in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the department.

  • Assists in organization and coordination of supplies and equipment to maintain an efficient and cost effective department.

  • Maintains a safe environment for patients, co-workers and self. Demonstrates awareness of and adherence to safety and legal requirements established at the hospital and unit level and established policies and procedures.

  • Applies knowledge of normal and pathologic anatomy and physiology.

  • Performs scrubbing duties as needed.

  • Performs preceptor duties.

  • Charges for equipment and supplies.

  • Assists in room turnover.

  • Assists with supply ordering, inventory control, and supply chain management as necessary.

  • Collaborates with surgeons and OR team to ensure needed trays, instrumentation, and supplies are ready for each procedure.

  • Participates in Quality Assessment / Performance Improvement and Infection Control Committee's as needed.

  • Applies principals of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner to maintain a sterile environment.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $31.85per hour - $54.78per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.Carle Health offers a comprehensive benefits package for team members and providers.
