Job summary

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Irvine, CA seeks a skilled Surgical Scrub Technician to support the operating room team. This role assists physicians and RNs, maintains instruments, and ensures sterile technique and infection prevention standards are followed.

The candidate will prepare instruments, anticipate equipment needs and participate in sponge and needle counts. BLS certification is required; multilingual abilities are a plus. On-call duties may be required as part of the schedule.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Scrub Technician program or equivalent military medical core training.
  • Minimum of one year Surgery Tech/scrub experience, preferably in ambulatory or acute care.
  • Qualified bilingual or multilingual candidates preferred
  • LDR and LDRP: minimum one year experience preferred in Labor and Delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Participates as a scrub/assist person on the surgical team under direct supervision of an RN/Charge Nurse or Clinical Manager.
  • Assists physician and/or RN and cares for patients during procedures.
  • Maintains instruments, supplies and equipment according to manufacturer instructions and infection prevention standards.
  • Reviews counts of sponges, needles and items and maintains equipment according to policy.
  • Decontaminates, cleans and maintains OR equipment using proper sterile technique.

Job description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Participates as member of the surgical team under direct supervision of an RN/Charge Nurse or Clinical Manager. Functions in the role of scrub/assist person and assisting physician and/or RN. Responsible for direct and indirect care of patients. Assists with maintenance, care of instruments, supplies and equipment according to the manufacturers’ instructions, standards of infection prevention, and institutional policies/procedures. Practices appropriate initiation and maintenance of sponge, needle and miscellaneous item counts and equipment according to policy. Decontaminates, cleans, and cares for operating room equipment utilizing clean/sterile technique used in a procedural setting. Identifies, gathers, and prepares instrument and equipment and specialty items for all procedures in a timely manner according to preference card. Acknowledges physiologic needs for the patient (size of equipment, maintenance of body temperature and patient safety). Demonstrates and maintains competency as an expert in 3 or more specialties/service lines (e.g., Thoracic, Ortho, Spine, ENT). May require on call duty. Performs other duties as assigned.

Additionally, the Surgery Technician II acts as a preceptor to other staff and students. May assist in development of educational programs. Serves as a resource for staff in specialty area.

LDR and LDRP (Irvine Birthing Suites): The Surgery Tech II LD sets up delivery tables and assist OB/RN with deliveries. Participates in a department Quality Improvement team/initiative.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Scrub Technician program or equivalent military medical core training (not required for GI Lab)
  • Minimum of one year Surgery Tech/scrub experience, preferably within an ambulatory or acute healthcare environment.
  • Qualified bilingual or multilingual candidates preferred
  • LDR and LDRP (Irvine Birthing Suites): Minimum one year Surgery Tech/ scrub experience required, preferably in Labor and Delivery.
