Valley Baptist - Harlingen Hospital, part of Tenet Healthcare, seeks a Surgical Student Extern to support perioperative care for surgical and obstetric patients. You will assist in sterile setup, procedure support, and team collaboration within a comprehensive care environment.

The position requires enrollment in an approved Surgical Tech program, a high school diploma or GED, and a current BLS certification. Expect exposure to diverse cases and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

• BLS certification obtained through approved American Heart Association.

Responsabilités

• Escort or transport patients using appropriate transfer techniques.
• Set up operating room with supplies and equipment per case requirements.
• Maintain sterile environment in all perioperative activities.
• Perform scrubbing/circulating duties as directed.
• Assist with OR cleanup, disposal, inventory and restocking.
• Assist with more complex treatments and procedures under nurse instruction.
• Support perioperative team across the patient care continuum.
• Handle clerical tasks supporting department operations.
• Participate in department meetings and trainings.

Job Summary

The Surgical Student Extern provides direct and indirect technical care to surgical/obstetric patients along the continuum of the age spectrum facilitating the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. Follows established practices and standards. Supports the mission statement, policies and procedures of the Valley Baptist Health System. Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Escorts or transports patients which may require applying appropriate transfer techniques
• Sets up the operating room with supplies and equipment according to the requirements of the scheduled case and maintains physician’s preference card
• Promotes and maintains a sterile environment in all job assignments
• Performs scrubbing circulating duties as directed
• Performs assigned operating room cleanup tasks including disposal, cleaning, inventory and restocking of supplies and equipment
• Assists in the performance of more complicated treatments, diagnostic procedures and physical examinations as per instructions from registered nurse with documented competency
• Assists other members of the perioperative team in providing care throughout the continuum of the perioperative experience
• Performs various clerical functions in support of department operations
• Participates in department meetings, in-services
• Serves as a role model for service excellence and commits to Studer Principles and “must haves”

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED. Currently enrolled in an approved Surgical Tech degree program.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Successfully completed a basic clinical skills lab. Skills checklist may be used to validate experience.

REQUIRED COURSES/ COMPLETIONS (e.g., CPR): BLS certification–Obtained through approved American Heart Association.
