Job summary

ASARCO LLC is seeking a Surface Repair Technician to perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on plant machinery and fluid systems. You will overhaul pumps, align shafts, and work with HDPE piping using fusion equipment in a heavy industrial setting.

Responsibilities include welding, rigging with cranes, machine shop tasks, and interpreting blueprints while maintaining MSHA-compliant safety practices daily.

Qualifications

• Experience in mechanical maintenance and overhauls across industrial pumps and rotating machinery.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Experience with HDPE piping, fusion methods, and pipefitting.
• Proficiency in reading blueprints and performing trade calculations.
• Welding carbon steel and stainless steel in multiple positions per code.

• Read blueprints and schematics; maintain a clean, safe workplace per MSHA.

Job description

This is a highly diversified position requiring a wide range of skills and hands-on expertise in general industrial plant maintenance. The Surface Repair Technician is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairing, and overhauling plant machinery, fluid transport systems, and heavy equipment to ensure safe, continuous operations.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

• Mechanical Maintenance & Overhauls: Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and completely overhaul all types of industrial pumps and rotating machinery. Perform precision shaft alignments using dial indicators.
• Piping Systems & HDPE Fusing: Prepare, face, heat, and join High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) piping systems using hydraulic butt-fusion and electrofusion equipment (e.g., McElroy fusion machines). Perform general industrial plumbing, pipefitting, and leak troubleshooting across metal and synthetic line networks.
• Hydraulics & Pneumatics: Diagnose basic hydraulic system issues, rebuild hydraulic components, and perform routine maintenance on fluid power systems.
• Millwright & Mechanical Fabrication: Perform general millwright duties, including installing, assembling, disassembling, moving, and setting heavy plant machinery and equipment.
• Welding & Fabrication: Perform structural and pressure repairs by welding carbon steel and stainless steel in all positions (1G through 4G / 6G stick/MIG/TIG) following proper trade procedures.
• Material Handling & Heavy Equipment Operation: Safely operate overhead cranes, boom trucks, forklifts, backhoes, and other mobile heavy equipment to move materials and support repair work.
• Trade Support Functions: Perform auxiliary maintenance tasks involving basic machine shop operation (lathe/mill), rough carpentry, and minor concrete forming/repair.
• General Duties: Read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals; perform precise trade math calculations for layouts and alignments; and maintain a clean, safe workplace in compliance with MSHA regulations.
