Job summary

The Surface Analysis Research Specialist at Cornell Center for Materials Research will support XPS and related surface analysis techniques on the Ithaca campus. You will train researchers, develop protocols, and troubleshoot instruments, working closely with users to plan measurements and provide hands-on instruction.

Applicants should have a Master’s in a materials-related field with 3–5 years of XPS experience; a PhD is a plus.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in materials science, physical science, engineering, or similar with 3–5 years' XPS/surface analysis experience
• PhD in materials science or related field is a plus
• Strong work ethic and self-motivation
• Ability to work independently and with others
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Proficient with MS Office tools

Responsibilities

• Train researchers on safe and proper use of surface analysis instrumentation
• Develop protocols and procedures for XPS and related techniques
• Perform analyses for on-site and off-site users and prepare summary reports
• Develop SOPs and lab safety protocols
• Document procedures via training sessions, online docs, and video tutorials
• Collaborate with instrument vendors to improve capabilities
• Maintain records of equipment usage, maintenance, and inventory
