Position Summary:

Responsible for the coordination of the operational activities of all aspects of the daily unit work of an underground coal mine to insure the safe, economical and efficient operation of the operating area. Supervises, leads and trains a group of equipment operators and support staff personnel in the most effective and efficient methods in safely operating underground mining equipment, the loading and transporting of raw coals to the surface, while observing roof control and ventilation. Co-ordinates with other mine management to minimize equipment downtime and maximize mine production .

  • Ensure that all employees, contractors, and visitors are aware of and have acknowledged the health and safety responsibilities specific to their job/position. Periodically assess performance against target for each person and provide feedback and ensure all employees and contractors understand the consequences for violating a Life Saving Rule.
  • Lead in the development the appropriate Risk Management tools and processes for the work teams in your area of responsibility. Take action to manage identified risks to an acceptable level before major projects and/or changes to equipment or procedures are implemented.
  • Provide time, knowledge, and other resources necessary for personnel to successfully complete their safety and health responsibilities. Implement and ensure that all employees working under your authority are knowledgeable in Risk Management techniques and following the SLAM process for all work assignments.
Key Responsibilities

Minimum and Preferred Education/Experierince
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience performing underground coal mining tasks

Required License/Certification/Registration
  • Mine examiner, mine manager, or foreman certification is required.
  • Must have respirable dust sampling certification or have the ability to obtain such certification.
  • GED or diploma is required
Physical Requirements - Underground Environment:
  • Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces for up to the entire length of the shift.
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Must have the ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time. Will be required to walk through different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and h eadroom.
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA.
  • Must have the ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of mine height.
  • Must have the ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination.
  • Must have the ability to lift 25 to 50 lbs on a frequent basis and the ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 80 lbs.
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, water varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.
  • The job requires that you be able to work various shifts (required shifts include days, evenings and nights with rotating schedules, weekends, and holidays).
This is a Safety Sensitive Role.
  • an uncontrolled condition which is likely to cause loss of consciousness or ability to control a motor vehicle or other large machinery;

  • impaired hearing (with or without hearing aids) that would prevent the person from hearing crucial safety information or alarms;
  • impaired vision. Individuals must meet the minimum vison requirements of at least 20/40 acuity (Snellen) with or without correction and at least 70° field of vision in horizontal meridian measured.
