Job summary

Responsibilities

Job Summary:

The CDL Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of equipment, materials, aggregates, and construction supplies to and from active job sites. This position operates commercial vehicles including dump trucks, water trucks, truck and pup combinations, lowboys, and transport trucks in support of excavation and underground utility construction projects.

The role requires compliance with all DOT regulations, company safety standards, and job site procedures while maintaining schedules and supporting field operations. The CDL Driver is also responsible for performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections, securing loads properly, and reporting maintenance or safety concerns immediately. This position plays a key role in maintaining job site productivity, safety, and operational efficiency.

Essential Functions:

• Safely operate commercial vehicles including dump trucks, water trucks, truck and pup combinations, lowboys, and transport trucks
• Transport equipment, materials, aggregates, pipe, and supplies to and from job sites and yard locations
• Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections in accordance with DOT and company requirements
• Secure loads properly and verify weight distribution to ensure safe transportation
• Maintain accurate logs, inspection reports, and required documentation
• Coordinate with dispatch, supervisors, and field crews to meet delivery schedules and project demands
• Load and unload materials and equipment safely using proper procedures
• Monitor vehicle performance and report mechanical issues, damage, or safety concerns immediately
• Follow all company safety policies, DOT regulations, and OSHA requirements at all times
• Maintain awareness of surroundings including traffic, pedestrians, utilities, and active construction zones
• Assist crews with general labor tasks when needed to support project progress
• Keep vehicles clean, fueled, and in good working condition
• Adjust to changing job conditions, routes, weather, and site access requirements
• Communicate clearly with supervisors, dispatchers, and crew members using radios, phones, or direct contact
• Perform other duties as needed to support operations and project productivity

Supervisory Responsibility:

This role will not supervisor other crew members.

Required Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Valid Class A CDL required
• Current Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Medical Card) required
• 2+ years of experience operating commercial vehicles in construction, excavation, or related industry preferred
• Experience hauling heavy equipment, aggregates, or construction materials preferred
• Knowledge of DOT regulations, load securement requirements, and safe driving practices
• Ability to perform routine vehicle inspections and basic preventative maintenance
• Strong understanding of job site safety and hazard awareness
• Ability to work independently and as part of a crew
• Effective communication and time management skills

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time
• Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 50–75 pounds
• Stand, walk, and work on uneven terrain for the duration of the workday
• Repeated bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing in and out of trenches and equipment areas
• Ability to use hands and arms for handling tools, materials, and equipment controls
• Work in outdoor conditions in all weather, including heat, cold, wind, rain, and snow
• Tolerate exposure to dust, mud, noise, and vibration from heavy equipment
• Maintain awareness and physical coordination while working around moving machinery and active job sites
• Ability to wear and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Work is performed primarily outdoors on active construction and excavation job sites
• Regular exposure to moving heavy equipment, machinery, and vehicle traffic
• Environment includes uneven ground, open excavations, trenches, and changing site conditions
