Overview
Hybrid, On-Site and Telework (Must live in Austin, TX area)
The Support System Administrator will be responsible for supporting the migration and modernization of EOL systems, including legacy systems running older versions of Windows and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The role will focus on upgrading these systems to supported OS versions (e.g., Windows Server 2016/2019/2022, RHEL 5/6/7/8/9) to ensure improved security, performance, and operational continuity. The position is Hybrid: On-Site and Telework in Austin, TX 78752.
Key Responsibilities

System Assessment & Planning
- Assess legacy systems, including Windows Server 2012 and older and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 5, 6, 7 and newer).
- Identify priorities based on system criticality, security risks, and operational needs.
- Develop a migration strategy with timelines, risk assessments, and upgrade paths.

System Migration
- Migrate legacy OSs to newer, supported versions (RHEL 8/9, Windows Server 2022/2025).
- Plan and execute upgrade paths; in-place upgrades as a last resort; perform reinstallation following best practices to minimize downtime.
- Implement data backup and recovery strategies before, during, and after migration.
- Validate system functionality after upgrade (performance checks, application compatibility, system services, networking).

Configuration Management
- Reconfigure system services and settings after OS upgrade (networking, storage, security).
- Utilize configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible for RHEL, PowerShell for Windows) to maintain consistency.
- Develop automation scripts for repetitive tasks across Windows and Linux.

Security Enhancements
- Perform system hardening on RHEL and Windows before and after migration.
- Apply patches and updates to bring legacy systems to current patch levels before upgrade.
- Run vulnerability scans and remediation to address issues uncovered during migration.
- Ensure compliance with internal security policies, CIS Benchmarks, and NIST requirements.

Troubleshooting and Support
- Act as the escalation point for migration issues, especially for legacy RHEL 5/6 and older Windows versions.
- Provide post-migration support for Windows Server and RHEL systems, addressing issues and performance concerns.
- Troubleshoot OS-level and application problems to ensure high availability and reliability.

Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain migration documentation, including steps, configurations, issues, and resolutions.
- Update system configuration records post-migration (CMDB and related catalogs).
- Provide regular progress reports and status updates to stakeholders.

Collaboration and Training
- Collaborate with networking, database, and application teams to ensure smooth integration.
- Coordinate with vendors or support services for legacy systems.
- Communicate downtime, changes, or disruptions to end-users and stakeholders.
- Develop internal documentation and conduct training sessions; share lessons learned for future upgrades.

Backup & Disaster Recovery
- Ensure backup solutions are in place for Windows and RHEL.
- Update and test disaster recovery plans post-migration to ensure business continuity.

Post-Implementation Review
- Conduct post-migration audits to verify functionality, security, and compliance.
- Identify opportunities for optimization and further enhancements.
Candidate Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum Requirements: Candidates must meet or exceed the minimum requirements; experience will be evaluated for suitability.
- Experience: 8+ years of experience with RHEL and Windows OS.
- Note: Expected Start Date 04/06/2026 and Expected End Date 12/31/2026; may be amended, renewed, or extended.
- Location: This position is Hybrid: On-Site and Telework – Austin, TX 78752.

- Hours: Normal business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with possible non-standard hours as requested.
