Job Description
Summary:
- The main function of a supplier quality engineer is to serve as the technical liaison between purchasing, product engineering, internal manufacturing, and external suppliers. A typical supplier quality engineer is responsible for resolving supplier manufacturing issues, implementing advanced quality planning systems, and providing technical support throughout the lifecycle of a particular commodity.
Job Responsibilities
- Assure supplier understanding and compliance with APQP processes and product PPAP submission and approval requirements.
- Review and approve supplier quality plans for new component parts and assemblies for new vehicle and or powertrain programs.
- Review supplier manufacturing processes and quality systems.
- Implement and monitor supplier part qualification and certification processes.
- Determine root cause of supplier manufacturing problems and implementing timely, effective, and efficient quality resolutions.
- Improve quality performance of suppliers by conducting onsite workshops at supplier locations, providing technical assistance in developing a robust quality system, or other technical support as required.
- Provide technical assistance during supplier launch, change-over and ongoing production activities.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of automotive interior, exterior, body, chassis, electrical or powertrain quality, manufacturing and engineering functions.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Manufacturing Quality processes.
- Knowledge of Manufacturing and Tool Engineering processes.
- Knowledge of Quality Systems Planning (APQP), including PPAP.
- Ability to perform statistical problem solving (Red X, DFSS, DMAIC).
- Unique skillset with extensive experience and knowledge of the specific assigned commodity/product.
- Highly motivated with demonstrated leadership capability.
- Proficient in print reading and interpretation, part measurement, gage design and function.
- Knowledge of geometric design and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Knowledge of manufacturing and assembly plant processes, procedures, tooling, equipment, and facilities.
- Knowledge of probability, statistical quality control and design of experiments.
- Ability to investigate quality problems and to apply sound technical judgment to develop potential solutions.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and lead diverse cross functional teams simultaneously.
- High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to travel up to 50% (daily commutable and overnight combined).
Education/Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related technical field required.
- Master's degree in Business Administration or Engineering preferred.
- Technical and Quality Certifications preferred.
- 10+ years of experience required.
