Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to support the therapeutic goals set by physicians for patients under their care by applying principles and accepted protocols of physics. Medical physics is the branch of physics associated with the practice of medicine, ensuring accurate quality, quantity, and placement of radiation during radiological procedures.
Qualifications
- Basic Requirements
- Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States; non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA regulations.
- Education: Master’s degree or higher in a physics‑science‑or‑engineering discipline recognized by an accredited college or university with at least 30 semester hours in medical physics, health physics, radiological science, physics, engineering, chemistry, or biology; or an equivalent foreign degree substantiated by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.
- Board Certification: Must be currently board‑certified in therapeutic medical physics by an approved certifying body, with ongoing compliance to continuing‑education requirements.
- Approved Certifying Bodies:
- American Board of Radiology (ABR) – field titles: Therapeutic Medical Physics; Therapeutic Radiologic or Radiological Physics; Radiologic Physics.
- American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) – subfield: Radiation Oncology Physics.
- Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM) – subfield: Radiation Oncology Physics.
- Grade Determinations (GS‑14 Supervisory Therapeutic Medical Physicist)
- In addition to Basic Requirements, completion of at least one year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the next lower grade is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities, including:
- Overseeing technical development and implementation of new radiotherapy techniques and modalities.
- Understanding current standards of care, VA policies, industry trends, and delivery technology.
- Applying fair, principled, and decisive leadership practices.
- Optimizing technical infrastructure and workflow through failure‑mode, root‑cause, and fault‑tree analysis.
- Assessing qualifications of staff and conducting performance evaluations.
- Maintaining advanced knowledge of regulatory requirements, manufacturer’s standards, and professional society guidelines for QA of radiation‑therapy equipment.
- Communicating effectively through written and verbal channels, with strong technical‑writing proficiency.
- Collaborating across disciplines and representing the profession within and outside the VHA.
- Knowing instructional methods and documenting competencies.
- Managing employee supervision.
- Preferred Experience
- Minimum of 10 years of therapeutic medical physics experience, with at least five years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Extensive experience with advanced radiation‑therapy techniques, including intensity‑modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic body radiation therapy.
- Proficiency in treatment‑planning systems, linear accelerators, and associated QA equipment and protocols.
- A strong record of clinical research, peer‑reviewed publications, and engagement with professional organizations.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, and a proven commitment to patient care and safety.

Responsibilities
- Provide professional, scientific, and clinical oversight of therapeutic medical physics for external‑beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy treatment procedures from simulation to treatment delivery.
- Oversee the technical development and implementation of new radiotherapy techniques and modalities.
- Supervise all other therapeutic medical physicists, dosimetrists, and related staff, including staff evaluations and professional development.
- Direct the technical aspects of treatment procedures and perform supervisory duties such as planning, performance‑plan development, and administrative functions.
- Direct and supervise implementation of new equipment and processes, including acceptance testing, commissioning, and quality‑assessment procedures.
- Ensure regulatory compliance and maintain the medical‑physics quality‑assurance program, overseeing the Radiation Safety Officer’s program.
- Collaborate with radiation oncologists and other clinicians to develop and refine treatment protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Maintain technical infrastructure and workflow efficiency through process‑mapping and failure‑mode analyses.
- Provide consultation on difficult treatment cases and perform patient‑specific validation measurements.
