Overview

Madigan Army Medical Center is seeking a Supervisory Health Technician to join our growing team.

About the Position

This position is located within the Army Medical Center Madigan in Tacoma, WA. The incumbent will supervise and serve as a paraprofessional member of the surgical team in performing scrub and/or circulating operating room duties with primary emphasis in one or more surgical specialties.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.

Responsibilities
  • Position or assist in the positioning of patients and drape the patient for the specific procedure.
  • Hand instruments to the surgeon during the procedure by anticipating the surgeon's needs.
  • Select, assemble, and organize required supplies, equipment, and instruments for specific surgical procedures.
  • Wash, disassemble, sterilize, and reassemble instruments after the surgical procedure is complete.
  • Interview and select candidates for vacant positions; identify the training needs of subordinates.
  • Transport patients from hospital units to the Operating Room.
  • Screen patients prior to transport to ensure pre-operative medications have been given, jewelry, dentures, and any prosthetic devices have been removed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Child Care Checks: Requires specific initial background investigation and periodic re‑verification due to interaction with children and youth under the age of 18.
  • Required to be screened for and obtain necessary immunizations/vaccinations (hepatitis, influenza, etc.), unless exempted by a licensed physician.
  • Mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and annual influenza vaccination.
  • Requires Basic Life Support training certification. Advanced certifications do not supersede BLS completion.
  • Requires use of personal protective equipment.
  • Drug testing designated position; consent to participate in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • Requires completion of a pre-employment physical examination and annual examinations thereafter.
  • Requires the ability to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Designated "Mission Essential"; required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled in emergencies.
  • Requires weekends and on‑call duties.
  • Certified Surgical Technician certification is required.

Specialized Experience

One year of specialized experience which includes assisting surgeons by passing instruments and monitoring patient fluid levels during surgical procedures; preparing and screening patients prior to surgery to ensure readiness; assisting with patient transport, positioning, and draping for surgical procedures; identifying, cleaning, and sterilizing surgical instruments while preparing operating rooms and organizing essential equipment and supplies.

Education

Four‑year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as Surgical Technology, Surgical Nursing, or Surgery.

Combination of Education and Experience

A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
