Overview

Who We Are

We are the first publicly-traded biotech or pharmaceutical company to take the form of a public benefit corporation. Our public benefit purpose is to provide a brighter future for patients through the development of novel pharmaceutical therapies; and technologies that expand the availability of transplantable organs.

United Therapeutics (Nasdaq: UTHR) seeks to travel down the corridors of indifference to develop treatments for rare, deadly diseases. We were founded in 1996 by a family seeking a cure for their daughter’s pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Today, we have six FDA-approved therapies that treat PAH, pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD) and neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer. Our near-term pipeline seeks to develop additional therapies for PAH and pulmonary fibrosis (PF).

The cure for end-stage life-threatening diseases like PAH, PH-ILD, PF, and many others is an organ transplant, but only a small percentage of donated organs are available to address the vast need. For this reason, we are working to create manufactured organs to address the shortage of kidneys, hearts, lungs, and livers available for transplant. We believe an unlimited supply of tolerable, transplantable organs will eliminate the transplant waiting list and cure end-stage organ diseases for which transplant is not currently an option.

Who you are

This is an opportunity to lead at the forefront of tissue engineering while making a meaningful impact on the future of medicine. As a Supervisor in Tissue Engineering Development, you’ll guide and mentor a talented team executing complex, hands-on bioprocesses that support groundbreaking work in regenerative medicine and organ manufacturing. You’ll combine scientific expertise with people leadership—shaping experiments, improving processes, and driving operational excellence in a fast-paced, highly collaborative lab environment. If you’re ready to step into a leadership role where your technical judgment, organizational skills, and ability to develop others directly contribute to life-saving innovation, this is a place where your experience will truly matter.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise the assembly and recellularization bioprocess execution teams with research efforts to support the development of tissue-based regenerative medicine products for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension and other lung diseases.
  • Coordinate and organize the execution of experiments using human and non-human organs, tissues, and cells, ensuring activities are planned, scheduled, and aligned with study needs
  • Operate in-house lung recellularization systems in novel ways while leading process development activities and identifying opportunities to improve current processes
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge to perform routine tasks and analytical assays, including non-standard or complex aspects, with little to no instruction, and provide guidance to staff on deviations from defined procedures while filling in, as needed
  • Supervise a team in the execution of tissue engineering cultures and the assembly of tubing, bioreactors, and specialized materials, providing technical guidance, prioritizing tasks, organizing schedules, leading training, and ensuring quality of outputs to support research activities across the lab
  • Utilize project management skills to plan and schedule experiments, coordinate equipment and personnel availability, manage resources, and determine feasibility and timelines for completion using independent judgement
  • Regularly review and analyze team activities and data to improve operational efficiency, including identifying opportunities to perform tasks simultaneously and implementing process improvements
  • Author and update laboratory procedures and protocols under GLP-like conditions, incorporating process development and operational efficiency improvements, determining when new protocols are needed, and ensuring team awareness
  • Coordinate technology transfer activities with industrial and academic partners, including addressing knowledge gaps, sharing protocols, and supporting successful transfers
  • Coordinate the preparation and shipment of samples to CROs and external vendors, including sample identification, preparation, and alignment with shipping teams
  • Record laboratory data in in-house data management systems, document experiments and process development activities, and ensure data accuracy by reviewing team entries and resolving discrepancies
  • Manage materials and reagent usage required for experiments, track inventory, and partner with leadership to forecast needs and support ordering
  • Coordinate team activities with responsibility for task delegation, methods, staffing, costs, and results, ensuring alignment with operational objectives
  • Ensure expenses and spending are aligned with the department budget and support planning and cost management activities
  • Follow and enforce proper procedures regarding laboratory safety, use of personal protective equipment, and handling of biohazard materials, including human or animal cells and tissues
  • Handle human tissue, cells, and/or materials that come into contact with human cells that may carry infectious agents. Shall comply with appropriate safety procedures and exercise universal precautions
  • May be required to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays to support lab experiments according to study design
  • Supervise direct reports including training, goal setting, performance evaluations, and providing support for recruitment process, as needed
  • Perform all other duties as required
Minimum Requirements
  • 7+ years of post-baccalaureate experience in biology, cellular and molecular biology, or biomedical sciences with an Associate's Degree or 5+ years of post-baccalaureate experience in biology, cellular and molecular biology, or biomedical sciences with a Bachelor's Degree or 3+ years of post-baccalaureate experience in biology, cellular and molecular biology, or biomedical sciences with a Master's Degree
  • 1+ years of experience demonstrating leadership through team coordination, coaching, or mentoring peers
  • Facility with appropriate word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and related standard software
  • Experience with laboratory instrumentation and data software
  • Ability to lead resolution of issues such as investigations, troubleshooting, optimization efforts and scheduling/logistical issues
  • Ability to effectively manage a diverse workforce
  • Ability to handle confidential company data, projects, information, etc.
