Norwalk Hospital Association in Norwalk, CT, is seeking an experienced Laboratory Chemistry supervisor to lead the Chemistry section, ensuring efficient workflows, accurate results, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biological Sciences, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive laboratory experience in Clinical Chemistry.
  • Current certification as Medical Technologist or equivalent through ASCP or other recognized accrediting body required (or certification eligibility, if applicable)

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily operations of the Chemistry section for efficiency and accuracy.
  • Direct supervision of staff: scheduling, time-off approvals, performance management, coaching, counseling, and recruitment.
  • Facilitate communication across the department through meetings and collaboration with internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure regulatory, accreditation and organizational standards are met; support quality initiatives.
  • Lead development and continuous improvement of departmental workflows, systems and processes.
  • Maintain expertise in Clinical Chemistry operations and assist staff and clinical partners.
  • Oversee the section's competency program: onboarding, training, assessments, and ongoing education.
  • Monitor inventory, supplies, vendor coordination, and budget-related activities.
  • Support capital equipment and operating budgets.
  • Oversee LIS database maintenance and related duties.
  • Demonstrate organizational values and maintain reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Summary

Provides operational and technical leadership for the Chemistry section to ensure efficient workflow, regulatory compliance, quality outcomes, and effective team performance in support of laboratory operations and patient care.



Responsibilities


  • Under the Medical Director and Lab Leadership, supervises the day-to-day operations of the Chemistry section to ensure efficient workflow, timely and accurate results, and continuity of service.

  • Provides direct supervision to assigned staff, including scheduling, time-off approvals, performance management, coaching, counseling, employee development, and participation in recruitment and selection activities.

  • Facilitates effective communication across the department through regular staff meetings, huddles, and collaboration with internal stakeholders to support operational alignment and team engagement.

  • Institutes and/or conducts procedures (i.e., reference range verification, linearity studies, assay calibration requirements) to ensure departmental compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards. Supports quality improvement initiatives, monitors compliance activities, and participates in audits and corrective action planning as needed.

  • Leads and supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of departmental workflows, systems, procedures, and operational processes to enhance efficiency, quality, and service delivery. This will include continuous review of section-specific events and the documentation and correction of all non-conforming events within section.

  • Maintains subject matter expertise and technical competency in Clinical Chemistry operations and serves as technical resource to staff and clinical partners. Responsible for troubleshooting operational and technical issues and supporting resolution.

  • Is responsible for the section’s technical competency program to include staff onboarding, technical training, competency assessments, and ongoing education to ensure staff maintain required knowledge, skills, and regulatory competencies.

  • Monitors departmental inventory, supply utilization, vendor service coordination, and budget-related activities to support efficient resource management and operational goals.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Oversees supports or delegates the maintenance of the LIS database.

  • Provides Lab leadership with pertinent information to prepare capital equipment & operating budgets.

  • Maintains and models the organization’s values.

  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance.

  • Performs other duties as required.



Required


  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biological Sciences, or related field

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive laboratory experience in Clinical Chemistry
