Job summary

BNSF Railway is seeking an experienced engineer to oversee maintenance, construction and inspection of bridges and structures across Burlington, IA and surrounding locations. The role requires strong leadership, safety focus, and collaboration with multiple departments.

The position involves 50% travel, a full-time schedule, and opportunities to contribute to safety programs and regulatory compliance at one of North America's leading railroads.

Qualifications

• FRA Tier III Certification within 6 months of placement
• FLS Certification required
• High school diploma or GED
• Experience in engineering department
• Knowledge of bridges construction, inspection and maintenance
• Familiar with FRA and OSHA standards
• Knowledge of union agreements and hours of service laws
• Strong safety awareness and leadership abilities

Responsibilities

• Administer, supervise and coordinate maintenance, construction, inspection and operation of bridges and structures
• Plan short- and long-term activities including budgeting and safety programs
• Coordinate with other departments for safe and efficient maintenance operations
• Address technical and safety training; liaise with field personnel to improve safety and quality
• Ensure compliance with company policies, safety rules, FRA standards and regulations
• Work in an indoor/outdoor safety-sensitive environment under varied weather

This is a full-time position located in - North (TBD) Burlington, IA, La Crosse WI, Galesburg, IL and Savana, IL

Travelisrequired approximately 50%.

Key responsibilities may include:

Administer, supervise and coordinateall maintenance, construction, inspection and operation of bridges and structures, both operating and capital functions.

Day-to-day and long range planning, budgeting, discipline, safety programs and auditing.

Coordinate with other departmentsto ensure a safe and efficient maintenance operation.

Address technical training, safety training, follow up on safety issues, maintain contact with field personnel and help enhance overall quality and safety guidelines.

Ensure compliance and application of company policies, i.e. BNSF's Equal Employment Policy, applicable safety rules, scheduled agreements, FRA standards and government regulations.

Daily workis conducted in an indoor/outdoor safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must have obtained BNSF FRA Tier III Certificationwithin 6 months of placement on this position.
• Must be FLS Certified tobe considered for this position
• High school diploma or GED.
• Previous work experience in the engineering department.
• Knowledge in the construction, inspection and maintenance of bridges and their component parts.
• Knowledge of structures construction standards and Maintenance of Way Standards, Maintenance of Way and Bridge Worker Safety Rules and the General Code of Operating Rules.
• Familiar with FRA and OSHA standards.
• Possess a working knowledge of union agreements and hours of service laws.
• Must be self-directed, motivated and have good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Must have a strong working knowledge of safe railroad operations and practices.
• Must have the ability to communicate well, one on one and in groups.
• Must be safety conscious and able to support and contribute to a strong safety process.
• Good supervisory and leadership skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or other engineering related field.
• Obtained BNSF Tier III Certification from a Manager of Engineering Certification
• Previous work experience in structures engineering, or experience as supervisor structures, bridge inspector or foreman.
