Job summary

Job description

Job purpose

Supervise, lead, plan, and organize workload for the preparation, packaging, and wrapping of all instruments and equipment for sterilization. Ensure that all instruments, packaging materials, and equipment are sterile, compliant, and readily available for use. Oversee Environmental Services operations to maintain a clean, disinfected, safe, and regulatory‑compliant facility environment that supports aseptic processing, employee safety, and operational excellence.

Requirements

Duties and responsibilities
  1. Responsible for organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling Sterile Processing and Environmental Services workloads to meet departmental service levels and operational needs.
  2. Responsible for maintaining accurate SOPs, sterilization records, cleaning logs, inspection records, and ensuring all required documentation is completed, reviewed, approved, and audit ready.
  3. Responsible for coordinating and ensuring the preparation of instrument packs, proper placement of instruments on trays, and ensuring adherence to established sterilization and decontamination procedures.
  4. Responsible for the systematic flow and control of instruments, materials, waste, and support services in Sterile Supply, Processing, Recovery, and assigned facility areas.
  5. Responsible for trending and tracking sterilization metrics, cleaning performance metrics, and departmental KPIs; provides reports and updates to department leadership for management meetings.
  6. Oversees inventory levels for sterile processing supplies, environmental cleaning chemicals, PPE, and consumables; partners with Materials Management to ensure adequate stock and timely replenishment.
  7. Accountable for the proper functioning, preventive maintenance coordination, and cleanliness of sterilizers, washers, carts, floor equipment, and department areas to ensure all operations remain in good working condition.
  8. Supervises Environmental Services staff in daily cleaning, disinfecting, waste removal, floor care, room turnover, terminal cleaning, and response to spills or urgent disinfection needs.
  9. Ensures compliance with infection prevention standards, OSHA requirements, safety procedures, waste handling regulations, and applicable healthcare accreditation standards.
  10. Conducts routine inspections of departmental areas to verify cleanliness, organization, safety, and readiness; initiates non-conformance and corrective actions when deficiencies are identified.
  11. Provides training, coaching, onboarding, scheduling, and performance oversight for assigned staff; promotes accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  12. Diligently attends to detail and pursues quality in accomplishing tasks. Reviews and manages departmental paperwork, logs, and records for accuracy while minimizing errors.
  13. Develops effective and attainable systems to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Associate’s degree or 2‑4 years of related experience in Sterile Processing, Sterilization, or Hospital environment.

Working conditions

Majority of the work is performed standing. The use of heavy machinery in enclosed areas can lead to a loud working environment. Weekend work will be alternated with employees from the department.

Physical requirements

The ability to lift equipment and instrument trays up to, but not limited to, 70 lbs.

The ability to stand for long periods of time.
