Job summary

Sharp HealthCare in San Diego, CA is seeking a Laboratory Manager to oversee daily operations of multiple laboratory departments. You will supervise AP personnel, CLS, CPT, and lab assistants, and work with the Director/Manager on budgeting and staffing to meet department goals.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's in Biological Science, at least 5 years in hospital labs and 3 years in supervision, plus California CLS Generalist licensure.

Qualifications

Hourly Pay Range (Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum): $62.230 - $80.300 - $89.930 The stated pay scale reflects the range that Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position. The actual pay rate and pay grade for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant’s years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, other requirements for the position, and employer business practices.

What You Will Do

Provides management support and coordinates the daily operations of multiple laboratory departments. Supervises daily work activity of AP personnel, CLS, CPT, lab assistants of those departments. Assists Director/Manager with operational planning and provides daily work directions to achieve organizational and department objectives.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree In Biological Science.
  • 5 Years Technical experience in hospital laboratory environment or equivalent.
  • 3 Years Supervisory experience in hospital laboratory or equivalent.
  • Experienced with fiscal and budgetary issues in the work unit.
  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Generalist license - CA Department of Public Health -REQUIRED
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with a large pathology group(s).
Essential Functions
  • Assists with operational planning to achieve organization and department financial goals
  • Assist Director/Manager in maintaining operating units within budgeted cost per U.O.S.
  • Develops achievable action plans when actual exceeds budget cost per U.O.S.
  • Contributes to the identification of and operationalizes cost reduction measures or identified revenue enhancing opportunities.
  • Coordinates departmental workload and staffing to optimize services in an efficient and productive manner.
  • Maintains units productivity at 100% or greater.
  • Assists with interview and hiring candidates.
  • Manages supply order and inventory to minimize waste and reduce expense.
  • Ensures facilities represent The Sharp Experience and Planetree philosophy.
Collaboration and teamwork
  • Communicate clearly and effectively; and work collaboratively with multiple people of diverse cultures, educational backgrounds, experience, etc.
  • Implements and/or assists with plans to achieve resolution.
  • Maintains a positive and productive relationship with the medical staff, peers, patients, managers, directors, and senior administrators.
  • Demonstrates effective team building.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary task forces.
  • Creates and provides an exceptional experience for all customers: Rounds daily on employees and physicians to build relationships.

  • Identify process improvement areas, and repair and monitor systems.
  • Regularly rounds on nursing departments to identify lab-related accomplishments and needs, resolve service deficiencies, and establish supportive working relationships.
  • Achieves and maintains hospital goal targets related to patient, employee and physician satisfaction.
Human resource management
  • Assures performance appraisals for assigned cost centers conducted in a timely manner.
  • Maintains up-to-date employee records.
  • Coaches, counsels and institutes Just Culture and developmental/corrective action plans as necessary.
  • Assists staff to access services provided by Human Resources and EAP.
  • Assures that all pertinent information is provided to staff through staff meetings and other forms of formal and informal communication; utilizing Closed Loop communication and SBAR.
  • Actively supports leadership decisions and is accountable for ensuring departmental compliance with them.
  • Provides staff feedback to Director.
  • Enables staff to participate in scheduling and staffing.
  • Assures schedule is posted within designated time frame.
  • Manages staff schedule and timecard in coordination with the Leads and Manager/Director.
  • Provides career path training and opportunities for career advancement of the laboratory staff.
  • Understand and motivate both professional and technical employees.
  • Perform conflict resolution at various times.
Quality Reviews
  • Assists the Director/Manager in coordinating the review of quality variance reports for assigned cost centers, identifies trends, and develops action plans for resolution.
  • Identifies and trends learning needs of staff and works with leads, Director, Manager and Senior Specialists to assure needs are met in order to achieve zero defects and zero harm.
  • Maintains JCAHO, CAP, and CA State and other regulatory agency accreditation or licensure with minimal noncompliance of minor deficiencies.
  • Develops, updates and implements policies and procedures as necessary for the operation and control of assigned cost centers.
  • Leads action team in problem solving and innovating to improve laboratory services.
  • Works collaboratively with lab leadership to meet and maintain the goals for survey responses including Culture of Safety and Employee Engagement surveys in order to measure Sharp's progress towards becoming a HRO for employee and patient safety.
  • Maintains knowledge of and is accountable for assuring compliance with regulatory and legal requirements or assigned cost centers.
  • Assists Director/Manager with preparation for Regulatory surveys and is held accountable for compliance with these standards for designated operating units.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Has full knowledge and understanding of hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Computer skills in the application of word processing, spreadsheet and database, preferred.
