Arizona Public Service (APS) is seeking a motivated Professional Engineer to lead the Engineering Oversight team. The Supervisor will guide a group of APS engineers, oversee engineering services for the department, and help manage a ~$250M annual capital budget.

The role involves technical oversight, client engagement, and contract negotiations, with potential outside business development. The ideal candidate has a four-year engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program, at least five years

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related applied science from ABET-accredited institution, IEA-recognized, or ABET MRA.
  • Minimum of five years of engineering experience.
  • Broad knowledge of engineering disciplines related to electric utilities.
  • Excellent people management, communication (oral and written), and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of contract development, negotiation strategies, and customer-satisfaction focus.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise department engineering work to ensure technical soundness and cost effectiveness, meeting schedule and budget commitments.
  • Develop plans and proposals that meet customer needs and are profitable with appropriate risk.
  • Monitor expenditures and ensure prudent use of company resources and money.
  • Maintain a technically competent department, hire and develop multi-discipline staff.
  • Provide consulting expertise, maintain industry and EPRI communications, and investigate new technologies.
  • Prepare detailed lists and cost estimates and ensure plant documents are maintained.

Summary

APS Generation Non-Nuclear is looking for a motivated, Professional Engineer with design experience and excellent people skills to lead an exciting organizational expansion. The Supervisor of Engineering Oversight will lead a group of APS engineers who perform oversight of engineering services performed for the department. This is a key role for successful execution of our approximately $250M per year capital budget and comes at a time of significant growth for our company. In addition to performing technical oversight of designs, this role may be responsible for developing and managing outside business which includes meeting with new and existing customers, preparing/presenting proposals, negotiating contracts and ensuring projects are financially sound.

  • A four-year Bachelors degree in engineering or related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA)
  • Plus five (5) years of experience in engineering positions.
  • Broad knowledge of engineering disciplines related to electric utilities.
  • Must possess excellent people management, communication (oral and written), and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of contract development, negotiation strategies, and proven success in attaining customer satisfaction.
Approved Engineering degrees:

Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Structural. A four-year bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering. A review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by the Engineering Career Path Review Board to determine equivalency level.

Major Accountabilities

1) Supervises department engineering work to ensure it is technically sound and cost effective and all projects meet schedule and budget commitments.

2) Develops plans and proposals that meet the customers needs, are profitable, and maintain an appropriate level of risk for the company.

3) Monitors expenditures of unit or area of responsibility ensuring prudent use of company money and resources.

4) Maintains a technically competent department to meet the needs of our customers. Hires, supervises, evaluates, rewards and develops a multi-discipline staff.

5) Provides consulting expertise as needed. Maintains communication with industry and EPRI. Investigates new technologies.

6) Prepares detailed list and cost estimates. Ensures plant documents are appropriately maintained.

CIP Requirement:

This position requires Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. The applicant considered for this role will be required to obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment in this position. A full seven (7) year criminal history will be obtained through the pre-employment background check process (or, for current employees, through supplemental background check process) to fulfill the CIP access requirements. In addition, this position requires an additional background check every seven years to maintain access.

Hybrid:

Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person).

In order for employees to build strong relationships and to promote meaningful in-person interactions, hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location.

  • Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).
  • Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.
