Job summary

Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Supervisor, Mill Operations is responsible for directing and supervising processing activities to safely and effectively process ore while achieving HSEC, production, concentrate grade, quality, and cost targets. The role oversees day-to-day mill operations, resource allocation, staffing, production execution, and coordination with maintenance and other processing functions.
This position provides operational leadership to Processing Production Technicians, ensures compliance with company and MSHA requirements, and coordinates short- and long-term production and maintenance activities. The Supervisor also monitors operational performance, addresses issues in real time, maintains accurate shift reporting, and supports continuous improvement across assigned processing circuits.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure employees and contractors work in compliance with Pinto Valley Mine, MSHA, company safety requirements, standard operating procedures, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Training & Certification: Ensure employees and contractors are properly trained and certified for assigned tasks. Coordinate with the Processing Training Coordinator to address current and future training needs.
  • Team Leadership: Build and maintain an effective operations team through recruitment, development, coaching, performance feedback, and performance reviews.
  • Employee Development: Establish clear learning objectives and work with team members to support professional development and operational competency.
  • Labor & Resource Planning: Ensure appropriate manpower, equipment, and resources are available to meet planned production activities while maintaining budgeted costs.
  • Production Execution: Direct mill operations to achieve production, concentrate grade, quality, HSEC, and cost targets. Identify and correct operational issues as they arise.
  • Work Planning: Establish clear work plans, priorities, and expectations to support department and production objectives.
  • Operational Coordination: Coordinate with Processing Maintenance, Electrical and Instrumentation, Tailings, Metallurgy, Mine Operations, and other departments to support safe and reliable production.
  • Maintenance Coordination: Ensure equipment is operated using proper practices and coordinate maintenance activities to maintain equipment availability and reliability.
  • Maintenance Planning: Review and coordinate short- and long-term maintenance plans and schedules with production requirements, including Down Day planning and scheduling.
  • SAP & Work Notifications: Enter maintenance work notifications in SAP and maintain communication between operators and maintenance personnel regarding reported equipment issues.
  • Operational Reporting: Ensure accurate operational data is captured and complete required daily, shift, weekly, and monthly reporting.
  • Shift Documentation: Complete short-interval control reports, shift handovers, 24-hour reports, downtime entries, and other required operational documentation.
  • Process Optimization: Identify opportunities to improve production practices, operating processes, equipment performance, and overall department efficiency.
  • Continuous Improvement: Implement initiatives, programs, processes, and practices that improve operational performance and support organizational requirements.
  • Issue Resolution: Identify potential operational issues and work with Mine and Processing management to prevent, mitigate, and resolve problems in real time.
  • Budget Support: Provide input to Mill Operations leadership regarding department budget development and resource requirements.
  • Governance & Standards: Implement operational programs, processes, and policies in accordance with company governance requirements and applicable standards.
  • Operational Leadership: Provide technical expertise, leadership, and guidance to internal and external departments as required.
  • Assigned Processing Areas: Depending on operational needs, responsibilities may include primary and fine crushing, grinding and tail thickener circuits, copper/moly flotation, and filter plant operations.

  • Other Duties: Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required

  • Three years of concentrator/mill-related experience in production execution areas.
  • Strong working knowledge of processing operations, including applicable theories, practices, methods, and procedures.
  • Ability to operate and make decisions in a production environment while maintaining safety, quality, and production requirements.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate personnel, equipment, maintenance activities, and production priorities.
  • Ability to speak, comprehend, read, and write English.

Preferred

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • SAP experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Outlook.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Work is performed in mine, concentrator, and tailings areas.
  • Approximately 25% office environment and 75% field environment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for short durations, including walking up and down stairs and across uneven surfaces.
  • Regular exposure to active mining and processing operations and associated industrial conditions.
  • Ability to work in field environments while monitoring equipment, production activities, and employee performance.
