Job summary

The Regents of the University of California on behalf of their Los Angeles Campus seeks a Skilled Crafts and Trades Supervisor to lead the Mason, Paint, Roofing, and Sign Shops. This role oversees shop staff, coordinates campus- and Center for Health Sciences projects, and supports project managers on tenant improvements and maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities include hiring and performance evaluation, contract development, estimating, and ensuring accurate project closure and charging.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Masonry and Roofing trades and related codes to direct work, evaluate progress and meet standards.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment and materials of Masonry and Roofing trades; cement mixes; roofing systems and products.
  • Ability to read project specs, blueprints, and technical manuals; perform basic math for budgets and estimates.
  • Experience coordinating work with other construction trades.
  • HR management experience: supervise, counsel, evaluate, and resolve issues in a unionized workforce.
  • Knowledge of human resources practices for performance evaluations and corrective action.
  • Strong English communication skills in one-to-one, phone, and group settings; proficient with PC software and panel programming.
  • Ability to manage multiple crew assignments and coordinate schedules.
  • Skill in writing concise, professional correspondence and proposals; analyze information to propose solutions.
  • Ability to prioritize work independently under deadlines; handle pressure and interruptions.
  • Ability to organize complex information and optimize efficiency in administrative tasks.
  • Familiarity with computerized facilities maintenance software (preferred).

  • Oversee and coordinate Masonry and Roofing shops, directing Lead Masons, Masons, Roofers, and Facilities staff.
  • Review daily schedules, coordinate with clients, and support project managers on multi-craft projects.
  • Write contracts (EDPA, PSA) and conduct site assessments, develop estimates, and ensure proper project closure.
  • Supervise staff, including hiring, discipline, evaluation, and termination decisions.
  • Assist in disaster response coordination and serve as backup to supervisors when needed.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Manager of the Mason, Paint, Roofing, and Sign Shops, supervise and coordinate the work of the Mason and Roofing Shops that include Lead Mason(s), Masons, Roofers, Facilities Mechanics, and Facilities Workers who are responsible for campus-wide, off-campus, and Center for Health Sciences projects related to fixed priced jobs for tenant improvement projects, deferred maintenance projects, trouble calls, and support to all Project Managers for multi-craft projects. Incumbent is responsible for the immediate supervision of shop staff, including hiring, discipline, evaluation, and termination of employees. Review and coordinate daily schedules and work; interface with client. Write contracts (EDPA, PSA etc.) and conduct job site assessment and evaluation; develop and review estimates; resolve project problems, coordinate outages, and ensure job is closed and charged properly; participate in the Disaster Initial Response Team. Backup to the Supervisor, Paint and Sign Shops in their absence.

Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of: all aspects of the Masonry and/or Roofing trades and related codes sufficient to direct work, evaluate progress and ensure that craft work assignments meet stated standards; construction trade practices and safety requirements sufficient to oversee all phases of repair and renovation work, prepare multi-craft estimates, work scopes, budgets and schedules; address project related delays or disruptions and bring to closure within stated timeframes and guidelines. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of: the tools, equipment and materials of the Masonry and/or Roofing trades; cement mixes; roofing systems and products. (Required)
  • Ability to: use a variety of power and hand tools and the equipment of the Masonry and Roofing trades; read work project specifications, blue prints, and technical trade related manuals; perform basic math accurately and efficiently in order to maintain and monitor budgets of projects, review estimates, shop expenditures etc. (Required)
  • Recent demonstrated ability to coordinate work with other construction trades. (Required)
  • Skill in: supervising and applying human resources management principles to a skilled trades unionized workforce; consulting and facilitating the resolution of disagreements, disputes, and complaints in a collaborative manner; establishing and maintaining cooperative, trusting working relationships with managers, campus administrators, officials, department employees, colleagues within all levels of organization. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of human resources management sufficient to conduct performance evaluations, counseling, feedback sessions, and implementation of progressive corrective action. (Required)
  • Ability to: concisely communicate using grammatically correct English effectively on a one-to-one basis, over the telephone, or in group setting to obtain information; explain policies, procedures etc., to all levels of management and employees from multicultural and ethnic backgrounds; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; use personal computer and standard office software such as Word, Excel, MS Project, etc. and the ability to program panels with manufacturer(s) supplied software. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to: prioritize assignments, organize work assignments of crew, and complete projects in a timely manner; manage and coordinate a computerized work scheduling program for multi-crews working on various projects simultaneously. (Required)
  • Skill in: writing concise, logical and grammatically correct correspondence, proposals, and or diplomatic emails that might deal with potentially sensitive issues (complaints etc.); analyzing information, problems, situations, procedures, etc. to define the problem, identify relevant issues, and generate reasonable and appropriate alternatives or solutions. (Required)
  • Ability to: prioritize a variety of work projects in a systematic manner. Ability to work independently and under pressure of deadline and frequent interruptions; maintain equanimity in the face of resistance, indifference, and or hostility; exercise sound time management skills and control of administrative projects and work proactively to mitigate complications that may jeopardize deadlines. (Required)
  • Ability to coordinate, organize and demonstrate command of a complex and continuously changing array of information, dates, places and people in a systematic way in order to optimize efficiency and minimize duplication of effort in the process of completing administrative support projects. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of computerized facilities maintenance software. (Preferred)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
