Job summary

HF Sinclair in El Dorado, KS is seeking a Supervisor, Major Capital Projects to lead a portfolio of capital projects (> $5MM TIC) with annual spend around $30MM, focused on profitability, safety, and reliability.

You will supervise project managers, ensure standards compliance, coordinate with external engineers, and report milestones and risks to refinery leadership, while building capability within the group.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of project management experience.
  • Experience on large capital projects with stakeholder management, refinery experience, supervisory experience, commissioning/startup knowledge.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in Engineering preferred.

Basic Function

HF Sinclair in El Dorado, KS is looking for a Supervisor, Major Capital Projects to supervise project managers who handle all major capital projects (>$5MM TIC). This role will oversee a project portfolio that has approximately $30MM in capital spend year‑over‑year on projects that improve plant profitability, safety, and reliability.

Job Duties
  • Manage the major capital program on a 3‑5 year basis while meeting the long‑term vision and strategy for the El Dorado Refinery
  • Ensure that corporate capital project standards are adhered to within individual projects
  • Ensure that third‑party engineering support meets productivity and cost KPIs
  • Coordinate with outside engineering/consultants on the major capital portfolio
  • Develop construction strategies while working closely with Capital Construction and Turnaround to manage overall project expectations
  • Oversee direct project managers’ workload to validate project flow efficiency
  • Coordinate and manage all requests for internal and external support
  • Provide refinery leadership and project stakeholders with regular updates regarding milestone completion, significant accomplishments, and communicate progress and problems in a timely manner
  • Provide leadership while building capability within the major capital project group, focusing on communication to project stakeholders

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their superior will be determined at the employee’s discretion.

Experience

A minimum of 10 years of project management is required.

Project management experience on larger projects that required corporate stakeholder management, refinery experience, past supervisory experience, operational readiness knowledge (commissioning and startup support), and capital construction experience is strongly preferred.

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required. A Master’s of Engineering or equivalent experience is preferred.

Required Skills

Ability to solve day‑to‑day problems on projects, develop long‑range viability solutions at the refinery, and lead collaboratively in a team environment. Advanced project engineering skills and training. Ability to develop and implement a project budget and stay on time and on budget. Intermediate computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database. Self‑starter. Effective written and verbal communication. Advanced reading and writing skills, with the ability to perform complex mathematical calculations.

Preferred Skills

Strong project management background. Stakeholder management and communication excellence. Supervision of five employees and management of outside engineering employees and additional human resources needed to accomplish the project.

Work Conditions

Office and field based with up to 10% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, outdoors environment, and driver‑based environment, including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, loud noises, and vibrations.

Subject to all temperatures, weather, and varying road conditions.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, reaching or grasping, lifting and/or carrying up to 50 lbs, pushing and/or pulling up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 200 ft, perceiving color differences, wearing personal protective equipment as needed, and a respirator in emergency situations (beards not permitted). Ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, with a valid state driver’s license and proof of insurance required. Job conditions may require standing and walking.
