Job summary

NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston Hospital is seeking a Supervisor, Lab - Core Lab MLS. This full-time on-site role leads a team across hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology and blood banking, ensuring accuracy and timely reporting.

The position requires a Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred), ASCP MT/MLS certification, and 5 years of technologist experience with leadership; 2 years in senior MLS/technical specialist roles are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; master's preferred.
• 5 years experience as a Medical Technologist with demonstrated leadership.
• 2 years as Senior MLS or Technical specialist.
• MT/MLS certification by ASCP or equivalent required.
• Experience with new instrumentation, middleware or LIS implementation preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise a team of Medical Technologists, Medical Laboratory Technicians, and support staff.
• Assign schedules and optimize staffing for efficient operations.
• Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide feedback.
• Oversee tests in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and blood banking.
• Ensure adherence to procedures and safety standards.
• Manage inventory, initiate supply orders, and oversee equipment maintenance.
• Develop and maintain QC/QA programs aligned with CLIA, CAP, OSHA.
• Participate in proficiency testing, inspections and audits and take corrective actions.
• Review and validate test results; communicate findings to healthcare providers.
• Provide training and ongoing education to laboratory staff.

Job description

Hourly Pay Range: $35.16 - $54.50. The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

Position Highlights

• Position: Supervisor, Lab - Core Lab MLS
• Location: Evanston Hospital
• Full Time/Part Time: Full Time
• Hours: Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm, rotating weekends and holidays

What you will do

• Leading, mentoring and supervising a team of Medical Technologists, Medical Laboratory Technicians, and support staff.
• Assigning and coordinating work schedules, optimizing staffing levels for efficient operations.
• Conducting regular performance evaluations, providing feedback, and facilitating professional development.
• Overseeing a wide range of clinical laboratory tests, including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and blood banking.
• Ensuring strict adherence to laboratory procedures, protocols, and safety standards.
• Managing inventory levels, initiating supply orders, and overseeing equipment maintenance.
• Developing, implementing, and maintaining quality control and quality assurance programs, aligning with regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, OSHA).
• Participating in proficiency testing, inspections, and audits, taking corrective actions as needed.
• Contributing to the creation and review of laboratory policies and procedures.
• Supervising the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
• Troubleshooting technical issues, coordinating routine maintenance, and arranging for equipment repairs.
• Staying informed about advancements in laboratory technology and recommending updates as necessary.
• Reviewing and validating test results to ensure accuracy and timely reporting.
• Collaborating closely with healthcare providers to interpret findings and communicating results effectively.
• Maintaining detailed records of laboratory procedures and results.
• Providing training, orientation, and ongoing education to laboratory staff.
• Fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within the department.
• Supporting the team in staying current with best practices and industry developments.

What you will need

• Bachelors Degree Required
• Masters Degree Preferred
• 5 Years Experience as a Medical Technologist, with demonstrated leadership experience required.
• 2 years experience as Senior MLS or Technical specialist
• Experience with new instrumentation, middleware or lab information system implementation preferred
• Personnel management experience preferred.
• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT/MLS) by a nationally recognized agency (e.g., ASCP) required.
• Additional certifications or specialized training in specific laboratory disciplines (e.g., microbiology, blood banking) preferred.
