Job description

This position requires scheduling flexibility. The ability to work weekends and holidays.

Summary: Supervise and coordinates activities of staff engaged in cleaning and maintenance of the Garden's premises. Train staff in all housekeeping techniques to ensure a clean and safe environment. Assists with duties of the Manager of Facility Support and other departments in the division as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plans, coordinates, and prioritizes housekeeping and facility set-up efforts. Understands all area assignments for both shifts and make changes as needed.
  • Supervises, trains, and assists staff; schedules assignments, setups and adheres to deadlines, policies and procedures.
  • Provides training and daily supervision to Facility Support staff; promotes a culture of teamwork and mutual support; monitors employee's productivity, workload and morale with the goal of promotin g employee satisfaction.
  • Develops, maintains, and monitors effective inventory control and equipment maintenance programs.
  • Reviews and approves timekeeping through the Dayforce system.
  • Coaches and develops employees for success.
  • Remain s alert, courteous and helpful to visitors and employees at all times.
  • Inspects completed work for conformance to standards.
  • Implements proven programs that will reduce supply cost.
  • Writes, deliver and enforce corrective action notices with Manager's permission.
  • Reports all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately.
  • Operates all Garden equipment in a safe, responsible manner; maintains general care of tools, and equipment Refers more serious problems to Manager.
  • Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed: informs employees and volunteers of safety guidelines and safe working practices and routinely monitors to enforce them.
  • Meets expected attendance guidelines.
  • Behaves and communicates in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork and cooperation, within our division and throughout the Garden, with coworkers, supervisors/managers, volunteers, visitors and employees.
  • Follows all Garden staff policies and procedures, including MBG Employee Handbook and established Safety Protocols.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position directly supervises 1st shift employees in Facility Support role. Oversees contract employees or as needed.

Qualifications/Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 to 4 years of housekeeping and general maintenance experience.
  • Two years prior supervisory experience; ability to effectively lead and direct a work group in managing multiple projects and provide quality results within a fast-paced mission based public attraction. Strong focus on execution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of housekeeping practices, including floor care procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of safety rules and regulations on use of chemicals and cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to read any special instructions and to understand label on cleaning products.
  • Working knowledge of safe operation procedures for various types of cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to develop written policies and operating procedures to ensure employee and visitor safety and reduce associated hazards.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels; must enjoy and feel comfortable interacting and working in close proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner, answering questions regarding horticulture collection.
  • Exceptional demonstrated project management, organizational, time management skills, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills required; ability to work independently with little instruction; coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, set deadlines, and complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Scheduling flexibility that allows working days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Highly visitor-oriented and experience working with the public required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal team members and external organizations for the purposes of creating a commitment to common goals, prioritizing, minimizing obstacles, and executing realistic priorities in a sophisticated environment.

Education:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration or related field preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of skills, education and experience may be considered.
Computer Skills:
  • Proficient experience navigating through various PC applications including, but not restricted to, Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Solid Internet research skills.
Language Skills:
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written).
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information to effectively execute and achieve results.
Mathematical Skills:
  • H.S. math aptitude; requires ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages and decimals.

  • Requires ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Ability to possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must have the ability to pass a background screening and motor vehicle report (MVR) to meet minimum insurance underwriting criteria.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR and first aid certification (within 2 months' after employment).
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. (i.e., load, unload and move supplies, medium to heavy tools and equipment).
  • May be required to perform tasks at varying heights (i.e., climb ladders, etc.).
  • Ability to wear personal, protective equipment, including fall restraint.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching for extended periods of time- 90% or more of the workday is standing on feet.
  • Ability to use buffers/shampoo equipment to clean floors if assigned.
  • Ability to learn and understand new housekeeping equipment as the industry evolves.
  • Good eye/hand coordination and good motor skills.
Work Environment:
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e., in temperatures over 100F as well as temperatures below 0F, in rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions as needed).
  • Actively works hands-on with other Garden employees, at times to complete simple maintenance tasks.
  • Comfortable working in immediate proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner, answering questions regarding Garden facilities.
