Job summary

Hawaiian Electric in Honolulu seeks a Professional Supervisor to plan and coordinate building engineering services and programs. You will supervise Facilities Maintenance Engineers, oversee maintenance contracts, and lead projects for renovations and system upgrades across multiple island locations.

The role requires 3–5 years in facilities management, 1–2 years of supervisory experience, and a valid Hawaii driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Civil, structural or mechanical engineering knowledge from college courses or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of regulations for design, installation and operation of facilities components.
  • Knowledge of facilities construction and estimating techniques.
  • Working knowledge of PC software (spreadsheets, word-processing, databases).
  • Professional engineer license is desirable.

Job Function

Plans and coordinates building engineering services and programs. Supervises Facilities Maintenance Engineer(s). Provides engineering services related to facilities and equipment maintenance programs.

Essential Functions
  • Plans, coordinates, directs/administers (supervises) and evaluates air conditioning, elevator maintenance, and other building systems maintenance contracts. Coordinates projects related to equipment and facilities renovation and maintenance. Develops, trains and provides guidance to the direct report related to corporate policies and procedures.
  • Plans, coordinates, directs/administers (supervises) scheduling and implementation of major maintenance programs for buildings, grounds, AC systems, security systems, power, lighting, water and mechanical facilities at, including but not limited to, Ward Avenue, King Street, and other various locations around the island.
  • Develops and monitors an asset management life cycle program to ensure equipment is maintained and replaced in an orderly manner and ensure all equipment warranties are tracked and accounted for.
  • Implements maintenance systems and coordinates capital expenditures. Travels to facilities to physically perform engineering studies and investigations. Performs inspections to confirm structural integrity of various mechanical equipment such as; hoists, shop fabrications, and modifications to buildings and equipment.
  • Serves as a liaison with other departments for facilities maintenance activities.
  • Monitors and maintains records of facilities energy and water consumption and makes recommendations on energy efficiency programs. Implements shop and safety equipment testing and hazardous waste management procedures.
  • Designs and implements best practice recycling programs to efficiently use materials and other facilities resources.
  • Prepares and provides formal instruction to employees and supervisory staff in the operation of new equipment, implementation of new procedures, and in the maintenance of facilities systems.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
Knowledge Requirements
  • Working knowledge of the principles of civil, structural or mechanical engineering including strength in materials, structural analysis, hydraulics, HVAC systems and waste systems normally acquired through college courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of government rules and regulations pertaining to the design, installation, and operation of facilities components and equipment.
  • Knowledge of facilities construction and estimating techniques as acquired through courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications (i.e. spreadsheets, word-processing, database management, etc.).
  • Professional engineer’s license is desirable.

  • Demonstrated ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including effective oral, listening and written communication skills; conflict resolution skills; the ability to work with a variety of individuals; willingness and ability to train.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a variety of individuals.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for State of Hawaii driver’s license in order to travel to facilities to perform engineering studies and investigations. Must meet the standards for required driving positions as stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Company Drivers policy.
Experience Requirements
  • Several years (3-5) related experience in building management and overall facilities maintenance programs or equivalent experience.
  • Few (1-2) years demonstrated supervisory experience.
