Qualifications

• Five years of professional engineering experience in highway lighting, traffic control, or real-time traffic management computer systems at a level comparable to Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Specialist) or Supervisor.
• Education: Degree from ABET-accredited program in electrical, electronic, or computer engineering or equivalent per California Education Code.

Job Description And Duties

Under the general direction of the Division of Traffic Operations District Division Chief, System Management, the incumbent serves as the Office Chief of Electrical Design. The incumbent oversees functional units responsible for the development and design of traffic control devices, traffic signals, electrical systems, control systems, lighting, bridge, tunnel and tube electrical systems, power distribution systems, weigh in motion (WIM), Transportation Management Center (TMC), Transportation Management System (TMS) field elements, transportation software and technologies, and Smart Corridors. The incumbent also manages the project delivery activities related to electrical design and traffic signing, analyzes complex electrical and traffic situations, provides responses to internal and external inquiries, resolves technical issues and assists the division management in the process/business improvements and resource management.

Special Requirements

Pursuant to California Code of Regulations 549.90, this position will be filled via the California Department of Transportation Managerial Selection Program (MSP) process. This process provides for examination and job-selection specific to each position and consistent with the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the classification.

This is a Caltrans Promotional examination.

Applicants must have a permanent civil service appointment with the Department of Transportation and meet the minimum qualifications by the final filing date to participate in the examination.

Minimum Qualifications

• Possession of a valid certificate of registration as an Electrical Engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. (Candidates who submit proof that they have applied for registration will be admitted to the examination, but must possess a valid certificate of registration before they may be appointed.)


• Either I: One year of experience in the California state service as a Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Supervisor), Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Specialist), or Senior Electrical or Electronic Engineer, Caltrans, performing highway electrical or electronic engineering work.


• Or II: Experience: Five years of professional engineering experience, at least two years of which shall have been in supervising the planning, development, design, construction, maintenance, or operation of highway lighting, traffic control systems, and real time traffic management computer systems at a level comparable in responsibility to that of a Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Specialist) or Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Supervisor) in the California state service.


• and Education: Equivalent to graduation from a college accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology with major work in electrical, electronic, or computer engineering or equivalent degree approved by the California Superintendent of Public Instruction under the provisions of California Education Code Section 94310. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

Examination Information

This examination will utilize an evaluation of each candidate’s experience and education (E&E) compared to a standard developed from the Class Specification. For this reason, it is especially important that each candidate take special care in accurately and completely filling out his or her State application (STD. 678). List all experience relevant to the “Minimum Qualifications”.

This examination will not establish a civil service list; therefore, candidates will not have the ability to transfer their eligibility to other departments. Candidates will be notified of their examination results.
