Job summary

County of Monterey's Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department seeks a Supervising Sanitation Worker in Salinas to oversee the operation, maintenance and repair of pump stations, sewer lines and related facilities. Under general supervision, you will supervise the sanitation maintenance crew and coordinate daily field work.

The successful candidate will have experience in sanitation systems, hold a valid California driver’s license, and be willing to work flexible hours, wear breathing

Qualifications

  • Two years of experience performing duties of a Sanitation Worker in Monterey County.
  • Possess a valid Class C California Driver’s License at time of appointment; Class A with tank endorsement within nine months.
  • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during emergencies.
  • Willing to wear self-contained breathing apparatus during prescribed working situations and emergencies.
  • Maintain good driving records and habits.

Responsibilities

  • Confers with the Supervisor regarding conditions of sewer facilities and schedules daily work for the crew.
  • Monitors crew performance for adherence to procedures and proper techniques.
  • Maintains records of maintenance on all district sewer facilities.
  • Trains crew personnel in repair and maintenance techniques and procedures.
  • Assists in selecting employees and evaluates performance; recommends discipline.
  • Inspects industrial discharges, new sewer connections and contract work.
  • Performs the most difficult maintenance on pump stations; diagnoses problems and repairs.
  • Services and maintains flow meters, injection systems and chlorination equipment.
  • Monitors repairs and modifications of control and alarm systems.
  • Completes inspection reports and maintains records on sewer line repair and maintenance.
  • Prepare cost estimates and estimates of materials and equipment needs.

The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department (PWFP) brings together a range of functions to ensure safe building construction, plan for the future needs of the County, manage infrastructure and county facilities, and protect natural resources. The Department is responsible for public works, county roads and bridges, county parks, and county facilities.

The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department seeks to fill a Supervising Sanitation Worker vacancy. Under general supervision, the incumbent will supervise the operation, maintenance and repair of pump stations, sewer lines and other sanitary sewer collection systems and appurtenant structures; and performs other related work as required.

The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used County-wide to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis.

  • Confers with the Sanitation Operations and Maintenance Supervisor regarding the condition of sewer collection facilities; schedules facilities maintenance and assigns day-to-day work for the sanitation maintenance crew
  • Monitors the work of the maintenance crew for adherence to established procedures and for proper techniques
  • Maintains records of maintenance and repair work on all district sewer collection systems facilities
  • Trains sanitation crew personnel in proper sanitation collection system repair; maintenance techniques and procedures
  • Assists in selecting employees; evaluates and corrects employee performance and recommends discipline
  • Inspects industrial waste discharges, new sewer connections and contract work
  • Performs the most difficult maintenance on pump stations; diagnoses problems and performs repairs; services and supervises the overhauling of pumps, motors and other related equipment
  • Services and maintains sanitation flow meters, injection systems and chlorination equipment
  • Monitors repairs and makes modifications of control and alarm systems
  • Completes inspection reports and maintains detailed records on sewer line repair and maintenance.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Working Knowledge of:
  • Methods of servicing, repairing and replacing electrical and mechanical components used in valves, pipes, pumps and motors
  • Sanitation collection systems
  • Basic methods and procedures used in the construction of residential sewer connections
  • Chemical testing procedures associated with sanitation treatment systems
  • Safety requirements related to the sanitation field
Some Knowledge of:
  • Basic personnel practices and methods
Skill and Ability to:
  • Perform heavy physical labor requiring strength, dexterity and agility
  • Properly and safely use various hand and power-driven tools
  • Operate a vehicle safely.
  • Plan, organize, train and direct the work of the sanitation maintenance crew
  • Read diagrams of mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Read and interpret a variety of sewer plans and profiles
  • Prepare cost estimates and estimates of materials and equipment needs
  • Analyze work problems and make corrections which will facilitate the completion of assignments
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records and files
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Prepare, establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others

Experience: Two years of experience performing duties of a Sanitation Worker in Monterey County.
