DEFINITION

Under general supervision, the Supervising Resource Officers are responsible for a variety of duties that support probation programs. These duties may include: supervising Probation Resource Officers and assigned programs; serving as truancy officers; providing supervision and oversight over the juvenile day reporting center; providing transportation to juvenile and adults both in and out of custody; conduct searches of person and places; seize contraband and property; counsel adults and youth and monitor progress in meeting rehabilitative objectives by sustaining a culture that utilizes Evidence Based Practices and the principles of Evidence Based approaches to programs in the corrections and probation field; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Supervising Probation Resource Officer is a Peace Officer position, is expected to perform the most complex professional probation work with minimal direction support. This class is distinguished from the Probation Resource Officer and Supervising Probation Officer by the fact the incumbent exercises full supervisory responsibilities over the Probation Resource Officers, and not Deputy Probation Officers. Incumbents in this classification are responsible for the care, custody, supervision and or transportation of youth while in their custody, or confined to a Juvenile Hall, a Juvenile Commitment Facility, or adults participating in various alternative-to-custody programs. Other assignments may include Work Programs, Electronic Monitoring Program, Day Commitment Program, rehabilitative alternative to custody program transportation, or other juvenile and adult supervision programs. Individuals selected for the position of Supervising Probation Resource Officer must be willing and able to work any shift on a rotational basis, as well as weekends and holidays. This position may also be subject to overtime, standby, and callback assignments. Performs other related duties as assigned. Supervising Probation Resource Officer assignments could involve dealing with angry, hostile and potentially combative clientele, the possibility of bodily injury, and exposure to infectious diseases that can cause chronic illness or death. Some positions include exposure to offensive odors and bodily fluids and exposure to chemical weapons such as O.C. pepper spray, Conductive Energy Weapons, and firearms. This classification is authorized to carry a firearm and Taser pursuant to Penal Code Section 830.5.

CLASSIFICATIONS SUPERVISED

Probation Resource Officer

Provides supervision, training, and work direction for Probation Resource Officers and assigned programs; coordinate and oversee scheduling of staff and programming; plans, organizes, and supervises a program of work, study, and recreation activities for Truancy Reduction and Intervention Program youth or the Juvenile Day Reporting Center, supervises and instructs juveniles in work and leisure activities, including housekeeping chores and community service work, and culinary skills personal hygiene; conducts individual and group counseling sessions, developing goals and objectives to modify youth's behavior; maintains good discipline; assists the Deputy Probation Officer with the Truancy Reduction and Intervention Program; assists youth with gaining insight into themselves and their relationships with others by utilizing Motivational Interviewing; monitors youth's progress in meeting objectives of counseling plans; enters information in logs and the department case management system; may assist Deputy Probation Officers in the development of treatment plans for youth that are consistent with Evidence Based standards; facilitates Evidence Based Programs; assumes custody of detained youth and complete booking process; advises wards of legal rights; contacts parents; serves as building and grounds security officer, performing maintenance and custodial work as required; supervises visitor activities; remains alert for potential problems and takes measures to reduce tension and avoid violence; serves at the department transportation officers for adults and juveniles; participates in training; may prepare and serve meals; may be required to perform emergency medical care; plans, organizes, and participates in the recreational activities; may be delegated special projects or assignments as needed; Provide on-call coverage for detention risk assessment and detention status.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

• At least two years of experience as a Supervising Juvenile Correctional Officer. Or;
• At least five years of experience as a Probation Resource Officer (formerly Juvenile Correctional Officer);
• Completion of advanced level course work in sociology, psychology, behavior sciences, or a closely related field is highly desirable.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Possession of high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid and appropriate driver's license.
• Must pass a pre-employment/pre-duty drug screening test and medical examination.POST HIRING TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
• Completion of P. C. 832 Training.
• Completion of BSCC required training
• CEW training
• OC training

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Physically defend yourself using hands, arms, or feet against an attacking probationer or other individual.
• Physically subdue with the help of others a resisting or fleeing probationer.
• Handcuff a non-resisting person.
• Handcuff a resisting person. (Assistance is typically present when this task is performed.)
• Run to assist others in an emergency or to get to cover. Running is for a short distance, typically 35-50 yards.
• Bend, extend, and twist your body such as when searching probationers, vehicles, and/or placing leg-cuffs or other restraints on a probationer.
• Put an actively resisting person in the seat of a car. (Assistance is typically present when performing this task.)
• Use your hands and fingers to search.
• Assist someone from a prone position on the ground to his/her feet using a lifting motion such as a handcuffed or moderately incapacitated person.
• Perform CPR. (This is typically two-person CPR.)
• Walk up a flight of stairs.
• Run quickly up or down a flight of stairs.
• Drive a car as part of your probation officer duties other than commuting.
