Job summary

Safe Passage Project is seeking a Supervising Attorney in New York City to lead a team of attorneys and a paralegal in representing immigrant minors in removal proceedings and related matters.

You will mentor pro bono lawyers, develop legal strategies, and report on case progress, while advancing trauma-informed advocacy and access to justice for vulnerable youth in EOIR, USCIS, and Family Court settings.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree and NY Bar admission.
• Four or more years of immigration law experience.
• Experience managing volunteer engagement; working with law firm volunteers is a plus.
• Strong database and computer skills (Salesforce preferred).

Organization Overview

Safe Passage Project (SPP) is a highly-focused nonprofit immigration legal services organization that provides free lawyers to immigrant children facing deportation. Founded in 2013, SPP has grown to include 60+ employees, two offices, and an annual budget of over $10 million. It manages over 1,600 open cases a year.

To date, SPP has supported more than 3,000 young people in NYC and Long Island. The New York Immigration Courts, some of the busiest immigration courts in the U.S., have more than 15,000 juveniles on their dockets, many of whom are fleeing trauma in their countries of origin such as gang violence and recruitment, abuse, and sexual assault. Immigrant children are not afforded free legal representation by the government, regardless of their age. As a result, more than half of immigrant children in immigration proceedings must go to court without the aid of a lawyer. Among unaccompanied children with legal representation, immigration court data shows that 90% are allowed to remain in the United States, whereas only 15% of unrepresented children are allowed to stay. This is where Safe Passage Project steps in, both through providing immigrant youth with direct representation by staff attorneys and through a robust network of pro bono attorneys who SPP attorneys train, mentor, and supervise.

About the Role

The Supervising Attorney will be joining a group of exceptional public interest attorneys to directly impact the lives of immigrant children looking for safety and security. The Supervising Attorney will supervise a team of attorneys and a paralegal in providing legal representation in immigration and other related proceedings, including cases involving asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, and other forms of immigration relief. Supervising Attorney will also directly represent minors in their immigration cases and will mentor pro bono attorneys doing similar work.

This opportunity will be based in our New York City office.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Supervise and manage a team of attorneys and a paralegal representing minors in removal proceedings before the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), Asylum Office, USCIS, and Family Courts
• Directly represent minors and mentor pro bono attorneys representing minors in similar proceedings
• Collaborate with legal management in the analysis and creation of legal strategies
• Supervise and provide detailed reporting statistics on each case supervised, mentored, and represented directly
• Prepare trainings and materials to present at Safe Passage Project trainings

Compensation and Benefits:

Safe Passage Project offers a competitive salary in the range of $115,000 - $125,000 annually along with a comprehensive and mission-aligned benefits package that includes:
