Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience preferred.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent litigation skills.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information.
  • Collaborative, holistic team approach.
  • Proficiency in languages beyond English is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the EPGP program and establish goals and objectives.
  • Stay abreast of NYS housing court laws.
  • Supervise paralegals, program manager and support staff.
  • Coordinate intake and respond to client, community, and staff concerns.
  • Monitor and maintain holistic representation and client service.
  • Analyze legal issues and develop strategies; supervise implementation.
  • Represent clients with caseload and co-counsel with staff attorneys.
  • Develop community relationships with organizations, agencies, officials, and courts.
  • Develop and maintain a productive work environment.
  • Conduct community education, training, and outreach.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Title: Supervising Attorney

Reports to: Department Director

Department: Food & Housing Division Office: Preserving Housing

Status: Full Time (Exempt) Temporary Per Contract

Summary: (Briefly describe this position and how it relates to the general goals of your office and the

Mission of Catholic Charities).

Attorney with housing court or other relevant experience who is admitted

to the New York State Bar. The candidate will possess a demonstrable

background in public interest work, and a commitment to the mission of

Catholic Charities Community Services. The individuals must have strong

self-motivation, and excellent interpersonal, communication, and

organizational skills to lead a team of attorneys, case managers,

paralegals, and housing advocates by effectively communicating

expectations, goals, while fostering an open environment that facilitates

communication. A commitment to producing high-quality work in a

timely manner is essential. Familiarity with relevant housing court practice

and residential landlord-tenant law is preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities Yes

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. 1. Oversee the EPGP program, develop and maintain overall goals and objectives of the

    program

  2. 2. Stay abreast of the NYS laws related to housing court

  3. 3. Supervise paralegals, program manager and support team to ensure the clients receive the

    best legal representation

  4. 4. Coordinate intake and respond to client, community, and staff concerns

  5. 5. Monitor and maintain a high standard of holistic representation and client service

  6. 6. Analyze legal issues, develop legal strategy, and supervise the implementation of legal

    strategies

  7. 7. Represent clients by maintaining a caseload and co-counseling with staff attorneys

  8. 8. Develop and maintain community support and relationships with community-based

    organizations and resources, government agencies, elected officials, and the courts

  9. 9. Develop and maintain productive work environment

  10. 10. Conduct community education, training, and outreach to promote the work of the office

  11. 11. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and/or experience required:

  1. 1. Juris Doctor degree and admission to the NYS Bar.

Skills, Licenses, and/or competencies required:

  1. 2. Juris Doctor with at least 5 years or more of legal and supervisory experience and practice

  2. 3. Member in good standing of the New York Bar

  3. 4. Prior supervisory experience preferred

  4. 5. Demonstrated commitment to public interest or pro bono work

  5. 6. Excellent oral and written communication skills

  6. 7. Excellent litigation skills

  7. 8. Ability to lead and motivate.

  8. 9. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and remain calm under pressure

  9. 10. Ability to work with highly confidential and privileged information

  10. 11. Ability to work in a collaborative, holistic team model

  11. 12. Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required
