Job Summary

Position is responsible for directing the activities of construction crews and for supervising construction projects on a daily basis. Duties include: initiating, carrying out, monitoring, and assigning work to crews; working alongside crew members when needed; keeping jobs on schedule; performing inspections; training employees and providing technical advice to crews; evaluating employee performance and attendance; completing daily paperwork and approving time‑cards. Superintendent is the party responsible for communicating with owner/customers, project manager, architects, engineers, and subcontractors. Assist in resolving safety issues and ensuring jobsites are in OSHA compliance. Responsible for supporting and promoting DSC culture through effective Leadership, Management, and Accountability (LMA). Enforcing company general and safety policies. The Superintendent I is the fifth level of an eight‑level construction series.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Capable of running projects over a million dollars with multiple subcontractors and a crew of 5 or more.
  • Responsible for day‑to‑day management of a construction project; studies specifications and coordinates with project managers to plan procedures for construction on basis of project schedule and staffing requirements for each phase of construction, based on knowledge of available tools, equipment, subcontractor’s scope of work and various building methods; develops three‑week look‑ahead schedules.
  • Supervises day‑to‑day operations of construction crews to include: recommendations on staffing levels; coordinating crew members and subcontractors; delegating work; ensuring adequate staffing; ensuring that crews have the required materials and equipment, that work conforms to specifications and that construction schedules are adhered to; and informing the project manager of any scheduling or cost issues.
  • Works in the field with crew members to make sure that quality work is done in an efficient manner to keep the project on schedule and under budget; serves as a hands‑on resource for the crew at all times by being available for questions, discussion and demonstration; maintains a positive enthusiastic attitude to motivate crew to increase productivity.
  • Inspects project to ensure proper layout of building including survey and double‑checks all subs for correct layout (under floor plumbing, wall layouts, etc.).
  • Supervises employees, including: making hiring and termination recommendations; evaluating and documenting employee performance; approving schedules and time‑off; training staff on unfamiliar tasks and safety issues as needed; enforcing company, state and federal policies; conferring with Human Resources Manager to resolve complaints within the workforce.
  • Performs inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with regulations and standards including OSHA in accordance with plans and specifications; and ensures that required records and postings are maintained.
  • Identifies conflicts with plans and specifications; confers with the architects, engineers, subcontractors, and customers engaged in planning and executing work procedures, interpreting specifications and coordinating various phases of construction to resolve construction problems and prevent delays.
  • Assists the project manager in resolving issues with customers, subcontractors, and vendors by investigating and responding to concerns and complaints.
  • Purchases materials and tools to be delivered at specified times to conform to work schedules; maintains adequate (not excessive) inventories; and evaluates new materials and products.
  • Tracks equipment used by project for submission to the project manager; fills out job logs on a daily basis to record subcontractor activity as well as general contractor activity; and brings any timing, cost or staffing issues to the attention of the project manager.
  • Schedules and conducts regularly scheduled meetings with crews to convey company and/or safety information, including safety awareness and training; responsible for on‑site safety including but not limited to proper equipment usage, ensuring that personal protective equipment is being worn and maintaining a clean and safe work site.
  • Attends progress meetings with project manager and owner/customer.
  • On‑site tools and equipment are maintained daily and coordinated with shop for repair when necessary; on‑site tools and equipment are properly secured to prevent theft and vandalism; makes recommendations on capital equipment purchases and projects.
  • Responsible for being on site and available during working hours of crew members and subcontractors. Hours of work vary as needed.
  • Performs construction tasks as a crew member when not assigned to a project as Job Superintendent; working hours to be set by superintendent of that particular job site.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned to support project and organizational success.

Required Skills/Abilities
  • Coordinating, scheduling and delegating tasks.
  • Serve as a working superintendent with knowledge of our self‑performing trades, including carpentry, concrete, steel erection, and millwright services.

Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.).
  • Eight years of increasingly responsible construction and equipment operation experience, including 2 years of lead experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties such as those listed above.

  • Frequent physical activity like climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, driving, pushing, pulling, lifting, and using hands.
  • Work may involve exposure to mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, dust, chemicals, oils, harsh weather, poor lighting, tight spaces, and loud noise.
  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally (with team assistance) and/or up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
