Reports To: Construction Manager (or directly to the Project Management team on projects with no Construction Manager assigned)
Location: Able to travel throughout the United States as required.
Position Summary
The Superintendent is the senior field leader responsible for the safe, productive, and quality execution of all work within their assigned scope. The Superintendent directs Foremen and field labor, drives daily planning and constraint removal at the site level, and ensures that execution stays aligned with the scope, schedule, and quality standards established by the CM and PM. The Superintendent is accountable for field-level performance across all assigned crews, the integrity of daily reporting for their scope, and the timely escalation of risks, changes, and issues to the CM. On projects without a CM, the Superintendent assumes expanded field leadership responsibilities and reports directly to the APM and PM.
Key Responsibilities
- Authority & Escalation
- The Superintendent has authority to direct Foremen and assigned field labor in the safe and productive execution of work within the scope, plan, and schedule established by the CM and PM; the Superintendent may stop work for safety, quality, or drawing conflicts and must notify the CM immediately when a stop-work action is taken.
- The Superintendent has authority to make day-to-day field sequencing decisions within the approved execution plan, but does not have authority to commit to scope changes, change order work, subcontractor scope adjustments, or any action with cost or contractual implications; those items must be escalated to the CM before field action is taken.
- The CM is the Superintendent's primary point of contact for execution alignment, roadblock removal, and escalation; the APM/PM is the escalation path above the CM and should not be bypassed except when the CM is unreachable and the issue requires immediate resolution. On projects with no CM assigned, the Superintendent reports directly to the APM/PM.
- Project Startup
- Review scope, drawings, technical specifications, resource availability, and safety documents before mobilization.
- Assist the CM, PM, and pre-construction team with site setup: manpower plan, equipment needs, material ordering plan, site organization, and risk assessment.
- Review the initial schedule with the CM and PM to ensure alignment, develop an execution plan, and ensure all long-lead items are identified and ordered; develop the initial material order and identify site storage needs.
- Ensure the availability of all current drawings, specifications, schedules, and site-specific documents.
- Where multiple Superintendents are assigned to a project, establish scope-of-work boundaries and document them via a marked-up ISO/plot plan with agreement from the CM.
- Daily Field Leadership
- Lead safety tailgate meetings with crews, documenting attendance and topics discussed, and communicate daily tasks, production targets, and quality expectations to all Foremen and labor.
- Address crew or personnel performance issues directly and immediately at your level before escalating upward; passing a performance observation to the level above you is not a substitute for direct correction.
- Track and record labor hours, production quantities, tasks worked and completed, equipment inspections, and subcontractor attendance and productivity; submit all daily reports to the CM and PM (time, production, safety, material status).
- Ensure all safety documents are completed and uploaded, and monitor PPE compliance and changes, operator qualifications, and equipment inspections.
- Client Engagement
- Serve as the Schwob representative when the CM, APM, or PM is not present.
- Conduct site walks with stakeholders.
- Identify issues early and elevate to the CM (scope changes, material shortages, schedule impacts or concerns, risk changes) via Procore.
- Reporting & Procurement Support
- Provide material needs, labor estimations, and subcontractor needs to the CM, who makes financial decisions (invoicing, purchase orders, expenses) with the project management team; the Superintendent does not have approval authority over these items.
- Support the CM and PM with weekly information and reporting needs, discuss equipment and material status, and maintain a photo log of all material, completed work, and safety documentation.
- Conduct the daily safety tailgate meeting and line out Foremen and their crews; enter time for crew, temp labor, and subcontractors in the tracker and TS/Procore, or hand over to the Project Coordinator, if assigned, for entry along with production.
- Update daily production into the tracker, coordinate with the CM and PM on RFQs for material needs, update the task list in Teams (if applicable), and monitor subcontractor performance.
- Collaborate with the CM and PM to align execution, monitor QA adherence, reduce waste by maintaining housekeeping and minimizing equipment idle time, and ensure material receiving documents are transmitted to the CM, PM, and Project Coordinators and uploaded to Procore.
- Safety
- Complete and submit all required safety documentation, including JSAs (complete, review with crew, collect signatures, and upload to Procore).
- Report safety incidents to the safety specialist and leadership immediately, and upload any applicable forms into Procore.
- Schedule, Change & Material Management
- Support the CM and PM by providing information on material needs, timelines, and storage availability; verify material deliveries against the PO/RFQ and track material usage daily; monitor tooling and equipment needs, requesting additional needs or surpluses through the CM and PM.
- Communicate client-requested scope changes, schedule change requests, or opportunities to the CM and PM via Procore, and perform a survey of all changes to ensure the PM team can accurately price the work to the client.
- Review and stay familiar with all project schedules, manpower and equipment usage, and timelines, and support the CM and PM with schedule updates.
- Drawings, Documentation & Quality
- Work with Foremen to ensure all revisions are captured and reported to the CM; keep field redlines and all marked-up drawings organized and updated via Procore, and support the PM with all turnover documentation.
- Verify work is performed per the most recent drawing revision, consistent with good workmanship practices and applicable codes; keep accurate notes on drawings covering work progress, subcontractor production, and overall completion status.
- Ensure productivity targets are communicated daily and provide daily feedback to the CM on crew performance and production; maintain current awareness of labor burn rate and productivity, and make field execution changes with an understanding of cost implications.
- Closeout
- Ensure all time, production, and costs are reported to the PM team; ensure all housekeeping at the site is completed, all rental equipment is returned, and a complete site walk with photographs is performed prior to demobilization.
- Assist the CM/PM with project turnover documentation, participate in After Action Reviews (AARs) to share lessons learned, issues, and process improvements, and conduct a crew review to identify assets and liabilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 3-5 years of field construction experience, including prior experience as a Foreman or equivalent crew-level supervisory role.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multiple crews and Foremen in a fast-paced field environment.
- Strong working knowledge of construction safety practices, including stop-work authority and hazard recognition.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for daily reporting and CM/PM coordination.
- Proficiency with Procore and other project tracking/reporting systems.
- OSHA 10/30 certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in midstream, pipeline, or industrial construction.
- Experience coordinating multi-disciplinary crews (Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Process).
